I am attempting to work part time-25 or so hours a week over two days.
The problem I am having is that the youngsters these days dont give a shit about nothing and the business owner is after me virtually all the time to work full time to cover for the young and worthless. That and they have not one iota of pride in their work.
I retired at almost 67.
We had paid off our principle residence and had paid for servicable vehicles and savings.
We had a lot of hobby stuff stockpiled — art tools, books, needle art supplies, quilt stash, cameras, computers etc.
We have taken a lot of cheap trips and bought season tickets to local symhony etc. spending too much money. We don’t regret it — we have relished it.
I could have worked longer but it would have been a big mistake.
I retired early at 57 and, literally, sailed away three weeks later. Currently sitting on my boat in Wrangell, Alaska, age 71 with not a care in the world. Just wondering when it will stop raining...
Wow, maybe I should retire and ... oh, I have a 14 year old and still need to pay for college. Did he address that ...? No, he apparently is young, healthy, and childless. Oh well, back to the salt mine.
Full-time travel. We sold both of our homes and travel the country for a living.
Well having TWO houses to begin with certainly helps. The article is kind of a joke. Not putting it down but "early" retirement to these guys is a whole lot different than early retirement to most people.
One of the funny parts, for me, is that I moved to rural KY from seattle becuase not only is it very beautiful and offers amazing freedom, but I can live VERY comfortably on SS alone. If that money “runs out”, that will be the least of my problems. Not that I don’t expect future price inflation to “adjust it downwards”. But still...
And with the virus and WFH, we can now travel wherever we want around the US while I “work from home” in the hotel room, hotel Lobby, nearby starbucks, etc...
When I retire Ill get roughly 65% of my income which will increase every 5 years thereafter. My wife will get about the same. Maybe a bit more as she learned her years in Australian social security now counts for ours! Crazy.
Our kids are grown (one one her own, son still here) and we have what we want: Two wooded acres among rolling hills in a very rural area of Florida. We don't have a mansion - standard 3-2-2 - but we love it here.
bkmk
I'll have two State retirements as well as Social Security. Both will be spouse-friendly so if I kick it, my wife will be taken care of.
I retired at 60. Been busy doing consulting and other fun stuff ever since. One of the best decisions I ever made.
Retired and loving it. More busy now than I was when working. Not quite at Soc Sec age, but everyday is n adventure. I have no regrets hitting the silk!
I realized Social Security and pensions wouldn’t keep me afloat in the U.S. - so I moved to Panama. Same U.S. dollar but at 60-70% of the costs.
In reality, what kills most retirees financially is health care. You can exist pretty well until you need that “procedure” to treat xyz and that costs a ton, including medications and follow-ups. Figure a way to limit that cost and you’re all good.
Also, pre-plan and pre-pay your funeral expenses as much as possible. That’s another good investment.
I’ll have 30 years in my govt pension at age 60 1/2. (9 years from now) At age 60 my military reserve retirement starts paying. I’ll probably only get 7-800 dollars a month, but the wife and I will both get tricare medical coverage. Our house will be paid off in 6 years. We have zero debt. Both my pickup and her 4runner are in excellent shape with low miles.
I’m gone as soon as I’m eligible. I’ll buy a motorhome with cash and start traveling.
Retired at 61 two months short of being able to collect SSI. Had over 200 sick day could collect on 120 of the days. Had 120,000 in one TSA. 25,000 in another. Collected 3400 a month from pension and 1400 in SS eventually. Retirement must be well planned out.
Pass. I don’t want to live in beer can
I retired at 65 and am thoroughly enjoying not being a boss anymore. Moved home to Texas so the social security and my California pension are more than adequate. I enjoy watching my 401K increase so I want the President to be reelected!
For the last five years of my career, my work in hospitals was changing so much that I wasnt motivated to continue. Now volunteering, fixing up the house and garden, getting healthy, learning languages daily on the Duolingo app and traveling to Europe twice a year (hopefully a second time this year!) are far better.
