AP says it will capitalize Black but not white

NEW YORK (AP) — After changing its usage rules last month to capitalize the word “Black” when used in the context of race and culture, The Associated Press on Monday said it would not do the same for “white.”

The AP said white people in general have much less shared history and culture, and don’t have the experience of being discriminated against because of skin color.

“We agree that white people’s skin color plays into systemic inequalities and injustices, and we want our journalism to robustly explore these problems,” John Daniszewski, the AP’s vice president for standards, said in a memo to staff Monday. “But capitalizing the term white, as is done by white supremacists, risks subtly conveying legitimacy to such beliefs.”

Tell that to my Dad! He was inserted into the manager's slot of several offices of a federal agency in order to fix problems caused by the previous managers. One of those offices was the Hollywood branch. So these were quite visible offices.

When he came near to retirement, an office opened up in a small Arizona town where he could have been closer to his grand kids. He asked for the position as a favor. He certainly was qualified. But those in charge who had benefited from his superior management skills chose an untested minority woman instead. Dad took early retirement in disgust. On the other hand, she washed out within the year.

This happened almost 30 years ago. So White's have been discriminated against for a long time.
