The largest teachers union in Florida sued Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday over his administration's push to fully reopen all public schools next month - even as the number of coronavirus cases in the state is spiking.
The Florida Education Association accused DeSantis and other state officials of violating a state constitutional mandate to keep public schools "safe and secure." The union asked a state court in Miami to halt the governor's reopening edict, according to a copy of the suit obtained by NBC News.
The lawsuit, filed in state circuit court, names several defendants: DeSantis, state Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran, the state Education Department and the State Board of Education. The legal filing is sure to escalate a nationwide political debate over reopening schools amid the pandemic.
"Gov. DeSantis needs a reality check, and we are attempting to provide one," Florida Education Association President Fedrick Ingram said in a statement announcing the lawsuit. "The governor needs to accept the reality of the situation here in Florida, where the virus is surging out of control."

I would rather do nothing and keep getting a pay check, too. Good to know that teachers think they are not essential workers.
Well, the idea is to just teach over the internet.
teachers....wow....my nuns in grammar school are rolling over in their graves....
Open the schools. Those teachers who fail to show up get canned and replaced. This isn’t hard.

Remember, these are - for the most part - Liberals.
Tell them it can be THEIR choice to either work or not and if they decide not to they can use their leave/sick leave till it runs out THEN they can get in line (at the bottom) for consideration for future employment if and when things get back to ‘normal’.
The most easily replaced worker in the multiverse is a union teacher. Easy degree, leftist usually, has no thought save for union thoughts, and no moral judgement whatsoever.
Fire their sorry liberal *sses.
Again, FIRE THEIR SORRY LIBERAL *SSES.
Stat.
That sounds like a nuisance lawsuit to me.
But that doesn’t change the fact of that some judge somewhere in some courtroom , is going to make a ruling on this.
And that should remind us all about the importance of who our Judges are. I don’t know about Florida specifically, but in some states Governors appoint judges to the state courts , similar to how the President appoints judges to the federal courts.
Which circles back to how important the Judiciary is, because the left has become so skilled at forcing their preferred policies through the courts.
So it may be up to some judge as to whether schools in Florida are allowed to reopen. That is the hand we have been dealt.
And to State the obvious, this shows us how elections have consequences. ,,
If a potentially fatal virus floating around means schools aren’t “safe and secure”, then the schools could never re-open, so let’s just dissolve that arm of the government and spend the taxes elsewhere.
Also, if the teachers won’t teach until schools are “safe and secure”, does that mean they hold a walk-out every time some gang banger sneaks a gun into the school? If not, why not?
The least they can do this year in Florida is wait to open school(s) until after labor day.
At this point we have to stop thinking in terms of “back to normal” and start thinking in terms of “forward to something reasonable”.
If they are teaching online we can probably get rid of the majority of teachers and para’s. I’d be moving in this direction and watch them all rush to their classrooms. Just think of all the positions we could eliminate. Don’t need the gym teacher or librarians, custodians lunch, people, school nurse.
Unfortunately the ones that will not be educated are the ones that need it most.
Leave them closed.
Forever.
Too bad these a-holes aren’t Federal employees. I’d like to see President Trump fire them all like President Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers.
Come around more often .... then the question will not be necessary
Apologies, thought you were reacting to the demand of the article and not OP’s opinion at the end. A lot of “in-betweeners” on this site so who knows.
No problem ... may your evening exceed beyond exceptional
Hopefully millions of parents will discover the public school design to be obsolete and redundant.
