This last week I finally got some red regular sized tomatoes! My cherry tomato plants started getting ripe a couple weeks ago at least. Heavenly. I have to say my cherry tomatoes are sweeter than the large ones so far. I totally forgot what types I planted. I have a very small garden on my patio. And over planted it, laf. So it won’t be fall before I can find the ‘markers’ when I clear them out.

I have a little more property. But this was easiest and a gardening experiment. To see if I could actually get any return out of them not the raccoons and opossums have been removed. Before, nothing. Now, yippee!!!

Hi Everyone,

I have five Brunnera (Jack Frost) in a row, and two are doing great. The leaves on three of them, however, are suddenly turning black and shriveling. They all receive about 4 hours of direct sun and then shade. I can’t figure it out, and I saw this discussion and thought you might have a suggestion. Thank you!

Hi Dianna As a newbie gardener I have decided to bypass one of my mentors suggestion of putting water in 5 gal buckets and letting it come up to air temp and use a certain size cup to put the water at the roots of my vegetates.

Since I decided to water in the AM instead of the PM I went out and got a wand attachment for my garden hose.
It is a Gilmour wand about a foot and a half long total overall length.

The kid who showed me where the wands were, talked me out of he very long more expensive ones, telling me he has used them all, and the shorter one is fine and does not tire out the hands manipulating a long shaft full of water. I'll give it a try.

So far the several vegetables I' m growing are doing well.
I even resorted to putting a ceramic bowl in the garden to let me know how much rain has fallen.

Hang in there - Tom

Just sprayed whole milk 2 parts, and water, three parts on the zucchini, cukes and pumpkins for powdery mildew. This after a week of cloudy but no rain weather in Northern Indiana. Things look better.

We enjoyed another week of hot and steamy weather here in Central Missouri. Got a couple nice rains, and then a veritable monsoon yesterday evening. That one dumped 1.5" in half an hour, and a mountain of small hailstones. No damage other than a lot of shredded leaves.

Mrs. Augie's pickle patch is still producing like crazy. I think she's past 24qts of fermented dills now. The tomatoes are trying to catch up to where they should be. I had my eye on a ~2lb brandywine a few days ago, but Mr. Cottontail got to it before I did.

We declared war on the muskrat clan that invaded the front yard cow pond, and have dispatched five of the vermin so far. The rascals tunneled into what I suspect is a void left by the root of a tree that was removed from the dam when we built the house. There's a noticable flow of water seeping through the dam now. That wasn't happening before they moved in, so I've got some work ahead of me to locate and repair that.

Water in the bait pond almost reached the overflow after yesterday's rainfall.

Have been busy moving planters which easily fall over to more secure locations. We are expecting this hurricane, whose name I can’t pronounce. Seeme like we are getting a bit of the leading edge right now as there is some drizzle in the air. For those in this group who night be effected by this storm, be safe out there!

Hi Fellow hopeful gardeners!!
I need some advice please. Something or someone is eating the leaves of my squash and cucs. Last year and part of this year, I battled the )*()(*(^&%^ squash worm and FINALLY this year have had one zucchini picked and got my cucs planted late but now something is eating the leaves!! Any ideas what causes this? It looks like I set fire to the leaf and a slow burn is happening. I’d post a photo but have no idea how!!

OK.

I encountered several, what looks like tomato hornworms on my potato plants. Something was eating the leaves right off them stripping them to stalks.

I thought it was the colorado potato beetle, and started looking for them and encountered my first hornworm.

Weird thing is, I have tomato plants and those are not touched yet.

Is there another kind of caterpillar that looks like a hornworm? Why would they go for my potatoes and not my tomatoes?

I’m looking for onion seeds for red, white, and yellow onions, that are long day onions with good long term storage.

They need to be able to grow in a northern climate. I will start them indoors and transplant the seedlings.

What are good varieties for those criteria?

I tried searching but there are so many and not all catalogs give all the info I need.
