The first time I voted, I and my collage roommate took the absentee ballots our parents made sure we got and went to the local post office. The postmaster notarized the sealed envelopes with our signatures and then he mailed them in for us. It might not be that involved now.
Absentee ballots are tracked and accounted for. Mail-ins are not. Mail ins are not verified and easy to counterfeit or just reassign or “lose.” With mail in voting the election depends entirely on those counting the votes and not at all on those voting.
I have a friend who runs a recycling center. He’s a huge Trump supporter. If I asked him to salvage all the discarded ballots from the waste stream; and told him they would be filled out for Trump, I suspect he might agree.
I wouldn’t actually make an ask for this but there are people who would. And while the benefit might go to Trump this time, it could go to AOC in the future. I’ve read that candidates spend about $100. per voter. That begs the question of how much is that loose ballot worth? In a metropolitan area, one could easily snag 500 to 1,000 unopened ballots per day from the waste stream.
Mail-In voting is a horrific idea that is in no manner comparable to absentee voting. People using the terms interchangeably are either terminally stupid or cynically disingenuous.

Absentee voting, and many posters have noted, is a process the voter initiates by asking for a ballot. That means that the voter is in control, and can take steps to ensure that they get the ballot, vote, and then return the ballot. Election officials only send ballots to legitimate, registered voters, and they normally check that the received ballots are from the voter who requested them.
By contrast vote by mail states send out ballots to anyone on a list of registered voters, to whatever address they had the last time they voted. The only security is some kind of signature check when the ballots are received back in the mail.
What a lot of "blue" states are doing is blanketing their states with ballots. I heard that they would send ballots to "registered" voters. I would not be surprised if "non-registered" voters were also to get a ballot in the mail.
Yup. When Christine Gregoire ran for Governor, she had to have multiple "re-counts" until they finally had enough votes for her to put her over the top. I always like it when they just keep "finding" ballots.
Hubby and I are in the same boat. His job keeps us in Washington; but, we are looking to move when he retires in a few years.
Yeah, and you are right about the "jungle" primary system in this state. It is a farce. I actually took myself off the voter roles here. I am a Conservative and usually vote Republican. But, in this State, it is just a farce. So, I do not participate anymore.
