This is INTEGRITY. The proverbial Handshake agreement and all it entailed. I promised you I would make sure you received your package by X date and I by God I made it happen. No excuses.
This use to be very common way, way back in the day. Back when INTEGRITY and a man’s WORD actually meant something.
It still exists but, it is now a rarity, not an expectation. In fact, it is so rare that it is now News Worthy.

I have had accounts at half a dozen UPS stores, going back 25 years when they were “Mail Boxes, Etc. “

The service varies with the store managers. The best ones will make it work. My best UP S Store experience was with Jim in Wallingford, CT (who stills runs his store). I had someone coming up from Louisiana to part out my 1966 Dodge Dart. and he couldn’t fit all the parts he wanted in his luggage, so I brought the other parts (including a fender) loose into the store after hours on Saturday night, and he got it shipped to Louisiana on Monday morning. That was service.

Sounds like he realized could earn much more by driving than paying the shipping fee.

Huge paintings would cost a fortune to overnight. Especially ones big enough to be considered oversize.

You can get a package anywhere in the country by next morning if you drop off at an airport location by around 9pm. Sometimes til midnight. BS there was no airport with a UPS within a few hundred miles.

I worked during my college years at a Sears Store, becoming an assistant manager for two joined departments, electrical and housewares.

I sold a light fixture to a woman, pledging to have it sent over to package pickup for her, while she continued to shop in the mall.

Then I learned our inventory count was wrong and we had none of that light fixture left.

I went to lunch, drove some miles to another Sears store in another city, bought the light fixture, brought it back to our store, processed it as a return, had it sent for my customer to package pickup. I know she never learned what happened.
