My father was born in Mexico City from a family that left FRANCE during the French Revolution.
His ancestry is French, Spanish and Irish. The department head at my school put me in the "Spanish-speaking-Spanish surname" category. My surname is SO French but she still put me down for the racist school district to see me as a "person of color." WHAT?!?!
This was AT LEAST 35 years ago.

Believe it or not, THIS just came down in my local FB newsfeed (from an alleged recent XYZ graduate) and I am doing EVERYTHING I can to expedite the information out to America.
X Y Z Board Members,
I have always been proud of my degree from X Y Z High School and I had a great high school experience. I learned an abundance of classroom material and life lessons from my teachers, coaches, and mentors throughout my thirteen years of schooling within the X Y Z education system.
I truly believe that our school district prides itself on educating its students and preparing them for life after high school. X Y Z teachers and staff care about their students and work to provide them with the information they need to succeed in their lives and for this I will always be grateful.
However, X Y Z students, and unfortunately students all around the country, are missing an essential piece of education. Students are not taught about the role of POCs, in particular Black people, in this nation’s history. We weren’t taught about how they built this country both as slaves and “free” people who continued to suffer from the aftermath of slavery.
We were taught that slavery was bad, and that Lincoln fixed that.
Then we learned that the country still wasn’t fair to its Black citizens and then Martin Luther King fixed that.
This was the end of our Black history lessons. We never discussed the racist issues and policies in this nation. I never learned about the effects of Jim Crow Laws. Or how mass incarceration was used to continue the institution of slavery but under a different name and how it persists today. Or how the “war on drugs” was a racist policy put in place at a time when drug use across the U.S. was already diminishing. Or how there is systemic racism in every aspect of today’s world in the U.S.- the education system, the housing system, the banking system, etc.
Not only did I not learn of the issues, but I didn’t accurately learn about the efforts to fix them.
Why have I never heard of the Black Panthers within a classroom (which needs to be taught not as a terrorist organization but as a group fighting for rights and providing free school lunches)?
Why hadn’t I heard of Emmett Till or Angela Davis? Or had a discussion of what a microaggression is? Or had a true look into the sheer brutality of the KKK and their continued existence? In the classroom we were told the KKK killed people but never learned the true violence and nature behind their actions.
I believe that X Y Z wants to prepare their students for life after school and wants them to be well- rounded and educated individuals. However, this will not happen until the school district incorporates into its curriculum the historical and present issues that Black people in America have/ are currently facing. It is essential to teach these important topics in order to create educated adults. We demand change so that our school’s future graduates have an accurate depiction of our nation’s history and the current issues it is facing.
We understand that many decisions need to be made surrounding the plans with schooling during COVID-19, however this matter is one of extreme importance and must not be disregarded despite other issues we are currently facing.
