UPDATE NY Daily News Closing Newsroom But NOT Closing Paper, Says They Will Continue to Publish, “No Layoffs”

UPDATE: Sources say the paper is not closing. But they are getting out of their lease as only a half dozen people have been coming into work, the rest of the skeletal staff if working from home. “They want to find a new smaller space by November 1st,” I am told. But for New York’s hometown paper not to have a home is very distressing. My source stressed: No layoffs. (There aren’t many left to lay off.)

EARLIER REPORT: The New York Times reports that the Daily News is basically dead, even if it will continue on like the Walking Dead.

Today the News will close its newsroom downtown and employees will have til the fall to come and get their things.

Will the paper continue a print edition? No one knows yet. Online edition? Why not?

The paper was sold to Tribune Publishing– then known as Tronc– in 2017 by Mort Zuckerman, who bought the paper out of bankruptcy in 2003. The previous owner was Robert Maxwell, who died mysteriously on his yacht. Maxwell was the father of Ghislaine Maxwell, now in prison and awaiting trial in the Jeffrey Epstein sex scandals.

Tribune, dedicated to killing newspapers, is also closing the newsroom of the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. Two years ago a gunman killed five of the reporters there. This is Tribune’s tribute to those brave heroes.

Zuckerman will have no comment on the end of the Daily News, which he legitimately loved. A few years before he sold the paper, he exited the public stage as a form of dementia, and perhaps Alzheimer’s, began to take over. His nephews assumed control of his companies, and got rid of the News as soon as possible. They basically gave it to Tribune and walked away.

Wow, didn't know they even used a newsroom, thought they just made stuff up from home on their laptops. Well, another one from the dinosaur media to bite the dust...

I guess Billy Joel won’t be in a “New York State of mind” without the Daily News.

Used to be a decent newspaper. They were always liberal, but they represented the working and lower-class. The old lunchbox Democrats.

I have several friends in real estate. They say that after this lock down EVERYONE is working from home and that it us unlikely that the big realtors will continue toi have offices after this.

Commercial real estate in NYC will be destroyed. Especially Manhattan.

Know a guy saving over 400 bucks a month from Metro-North for the commute and 200 bucks a month not having to take the subway into Manhattan. It ain’t never coming back.

#3. The NYDN became a vicious, anti-Trump rag in recent years. Now the NY Post is going to replace them to some extent unless one of the rich leftists produce a new paper.

The Daily News used to be a really good paper about 10 years ago. Then it turned seriously left wing and I refused to read it any more, even free online.

Prospects will be brighter once they learn to code.

Currently, the New York Post and even Long Island Newsday have more circulation than the Daily News and New York Times. I remember when it was the New York Post that was the wannabe (part of the reason why it was not included in Billy Joel’s song). The Times and the News had close to a million a day circulation. The Post wasn’t even available past Fairfield County in CT until a newspaper strike gave them an opportunity to expand. In those days, a superior sports section was a great way for an NYC tabloid to expand readership, and the Post had one.

Good. I hope I live long enough to see the NY Times go out of business too. To hell with them all.

Remember how the Post was an Afternoon Paper? It would come out each afternoon, not in the AM. So you could get fresh news! Also, the Long Island Press was like that, but I guess that one is long gone.

That might have been before my time. I doubt CT would have gotten an afternoon edition of a NY paper past Fairfield County, the New Haven Register was the dominant New Haven paper and it was an afternoon edition as well. Even smaller cities like Meriden would have a morning and evening paper.

When I went to college in Chicago, I found that the Chicago Tribune had MULTIPLE editions, with the afternoon paper featuring a green masthead (the green streak).

The Daily News building was the set for Clark Kent’s Daily Planet. Iconic NYC architecture will be turned into condos.....

That will never happen. If Carlos Slim doesn't buy it outright someone like Bezos will and let it lose money while it puts out propaganda.

“... the afternoon paper featuring a green masthead (the green streak).”

That’s interesting, so you’d be sure you were getting the latest edition.

The daily news is a leftist rag, written for people who can only understand words of one syllable, and who don’t know what a syllable is.
I subscribe to the New York Post, which favors Trump and law enforcement, and trashes deblobio and cuuuuoooommmmo.

To: I want the USA back

I recall that sometime in the ‘90s The Daily News ran a scratch off contest with a large prize, maybe 200K. Unfortunately, the printer in NJ mistakenly printed two winning tickets. Somehow, the paper determined one was valid and the other one wasn’t and refused to pay it. The Post had a great time with the story, running a full front page picture of a crying woman holding the disqualified ticket under the headline “The Daily News Welches”, and they did follow-up stories on the front page for the next week. What made the story even better was that this was the second time in ten years this exact thing had happened, and the Daily News refused to pay.
