Clinton’s other two senior policy advisers are both longtime members of her team. Jake Sullivan, who leads Clinton on foreign-policy and security matters, worked for her at the State Department; Ann O’Leary, who directs health-care strategy, worked for her in the Senate.
Harris, by contrast, met with Clinton professionally only weeks before the candidate announced that she’d been hired. She is less visible than Sullivan or O’Leary; her statement on Trump’s child-care policy was only her third or fourth quote in the Times. And yet, according to John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign chairman, Harris and Clinton “traffic in midnight e-mails, getting the fine points on policy—deciding what to tweak.” Harris has been “a partner with Hillary,” he said, in developing the domestic agenda for the candidate’s possible Presidency, focussing on issues of race, gender, economic empowerment, criminal justice, policing, immigration, voting rights, and executive action. If Clinton is elected, Harris is likely to take on a top job in the West Wing...
Together, Clinton and Harris met with Campaign Zero activists including DeRay McKesson (BLM) and ***Brittany Packnett (Campaign Zero), both of whom, in late October, formally endorsed the candidate...
(Maya Harris’s husband, Tony West, served as an associate attorney general of the United States at the Department of Justice, after being nominated by President Obama, in 2012.)...
