Facebook threatens to leave Europe if Ireland enforces ban on data sharing with US

CALIFORNIA: Facebook may have to pull out of Europe if the Irish Data Protection Commission enforces a ban on sharing data with the US after the European Court of Justice found that the bloc's measures to protect its data from US intelligence agencies were insufficient, Head of Data Protection and Associate General Counsel at Facebook Ireland Yvonne Cunnane said in a court filing.

In July, the European Court of Justice invalidated the 2016 Privacy Shield, saying that EU digital privacy laws were at risk of being violated under the agreement, which allows for data to be transferred, stored, and processed in the United States.

"In the event that [Facebook] was subject to a complete prohibition on the transfer of user data to the United States, as appears to be what the DPC [Data Protection Commissioner] proposes, it is not clear to [Facebook] how, in such circumstances, it could continue to provide inter alia the Facebook and Instagram services in the EU," the document unveiled earlier this week said.

Yup.
Europe should be so lucky.
Plenty of other better alternatives from Europe and elsewhere
Facebook is the quintessential “non essential” service.

Can we pass a law like that here? I normally do not like government getting involved in private industry but fb operates like an unregistered utility anyway.

Given the meme ban, the link tax, and what Bertelsmann Arvato is doing for Facebook in Europe I find it interesting that they’re having kittens about this.

Just to be clear, I have never joined Facebook or Twitter or any social media in my life. I think they are a complete waste of time and I value my privacy.

This is fun on so many levels. Facebook, the ultimate globetrotting experience, now in danger of exile. And at the same time Ireland and Europe are confronted by a major threat from what is basically a collection of binary numbers.

Since FB was given to Zuck to achieve the DARPA “Information Awareness Office” goals of total information gathering to shunt around Constitutional restrictions on the government spying on its own system, the proposed data sharing restriction would remove FB’s whole reason for existence.

Good for the EU.

You see ALL these big Internet companies are NOT in business to serve YOU. You are not their customers. They don’t give a dam about you. You are - your data is - the product they produce for their customers - those in the business of buying your data; whether for advertising or any other purpose. Facebook, Google et al are in the business of packaging YOU for sale - your data, in different sets of bits and pieces to please different customers. They - Facebook at al - exists for those customers, NOT you.

Can such outfits exist without selling your data?

Does FreeRepublic exist without selling your data? Yes. Do many paid-subscription sites exist without selling your data? Yes.

There’s your answer.

It is not that a Goggle or Facebook cannot exist without being in the real business of selling your data. It is only that they don’t want to exist that way, that that is not the particular business model they want.

Frankly, I think it is a very bad business model for all.
