Patton gave a speech very similar to the movie to troops in England. My grandfather was one of those troops.
Didn’t I just write that? Coppola took the speeches (there were a bunch of them) and consolidated them. He did a good job. That was not my primary point.
My point is that MOST people around today are not enthralled with Patton. They are enthralled with George C Scott, reading Francis Ford Coppola’s words, as Patton. In a big Hollywood movie. Most people today, could not tell you that he was a poet, an inventor, and an Olympic athlete.
And the funny part is...they don’t even realize they are idolizing a movie, a write, and an actor who would not agree with almost anything they stood for today.
