Ex-”what”? Husband? Boy toy? Philatelic collecting partner?

Just using “ex” means nothing these days, as the meaning of “date” and “fiancee” has changed dramatically.

And “cheating” is used when there is no marriage, which to me isn’t “cheating” at all, as no real commitment has been made.

Agree. My daughter, who has been married for 4 years now, constantly refers to her “ex” even though she is in her first marriage. In her mind, the boyfriend that she lived with for 3 years is her ex. My advice to her has been constant. 1) he is not your ex because not only did you never marry him, you were never engaged and 2) after all these years why do you still even talk about him.
