When the definitive history of Donald Trumps presidency is written, itll likely begin on April 30, 2011, long before he was actually elected.
Thats when Seth Meyers, then the anchor of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live, told a joke that, some believe, so infuriated Trump he resolved to run for president.
Speaking at the White House Correspondents' Dinner that night, Meyers acknowledged Trump in the audience, and then said: Donald Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke.
It got a big laugh, but not from Trump, who who sat rigid and stone-faced in the audience, staring daggers at Meyers.
(snip)
Meyers didnt write that joke. Comedian Jon Rineman did and he regrets it. Talking publicly for the first time about the one-liner regarded by some as a pivotal moment in American political history, Rineman thinks he and the country would be better off today if he never scribbled that joke in his notebook. Hes not kidding. Rineman is tormented by the idea that he could be one of the reasons Trump became president.
Was the run for president in 2016 Trumps revenge? Some think so.
On that night, Trumps own sense of public humiliation became so overwhelming that he decided, perhaps at first unconsciously, that he would, somehow, get his own back perhaps even pursue the presidency after all, no matter how nihilistically or absurdly, and redeem himself, The New Yorkers Adam Gopnik, who was seated a few tables from Trump at the dinner, wrote in 2015.

Seth Myers is a sissy boy.
Trump should give a Presidential Medal of Freedom to Jon Rineman. That should seal the humiliation pretty thoroughly.
Um, this guy is giving himself way too much credit. Trump talked about running for President in the 1980s.
I think it was the night Obama roasted him from the dias at the White House Correspondents Association dinner. All the lefty a-holes are laughing and Trump is visibly seething.
Loser is full of himself. It was Obama taunting him and being the worst President in US history.
Beta males.
That would be great
More bon mots from the Boston Glob.

Don’t you just hate it when you make decisions while unconscious?
More insanity form our Swamp Gas media.
Chris Wallace spoke to Trump at a Republican convention in 1988 and Trump said he would have a good chance of winning if he ran.
But reading the comments at the article is downright spooky. Note to self: stay far, far away from Boston, MA.
If true, it wasn’t the first time the course of history was shaped by some petty insult or trivial event. Roman history is replete with petty incidents that put armies on the march, fleets to sail and proscription lists to be published.
Jon you are not that important.
Sorry bud, what has been said can not be unsaid. We should thank you though, for Trump 2016 and Trump 2020 .
Trump ran for President because Seth Myers delivered a snarky Alan Rineman punchline about him?
Long years earlier, Trump TOLD Oprah he was going to run for President one day.
They always find a weak premise to insert themselves as the cause into every historical event that doesn’t involve them.
Trump has many influencing moments.
Per his unauthorized biography,
Young Trump and his father were sitting with the architect who designed the Verazanno Narrows Bridge. It was the Grand Opening ceremony and the Mayor of New York City, The governors of New York and New Jersey were present for the ceremony.
Not once did they mention the architect’s name during the ceremony. He was furious.
This so impacted 21 year old Trump that he decided to put his name on everything he built.
The Boston Globe has Seth Myers.
We have Donald Trump,
