“We really need to make patients aware that this is not going to be a walk in the park,”
...officials and drugmakers could try talking about the side effects in a more positive way. She said they could use language such as “response” instead of “adverse reaction.”

can’t sue ... Congress granted vaccine makers blanket immunity:
federal law protects vaccine makers from product-liability lawsuits that are filed in state courts and seek damages for injuries or death attributed to a vaccine.
In the 57-page opinion written by Justice Antonin Scalia, the Supreme Court explained that the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 (NCVIA or Act) preempts all design-defect claims against vaccine manufacturers brought by plaintiffs seeking compensation for injury or death caused by a vaccine’s side effects.
A year ago this week, I got my second shingles shot.
The next day, I felt like a heavyweight had hit my injection arm with a ball bat. I had the bruises to show it.
2 days later I either got Covid or a lot of stuff from that shot. I had a mild fever and blood in my urine.
My wife, a retired RN called our HMO online advice person. They had me come in for a urine test and to get an RX for a probable infection. The on call doc wrote an RX for 5 days of an oral quin-alone and a 5 days of Bactrim. The urine test was negative re any bacteria.
We went to a son’s home for Thanksgiving dinner. My low fever was gone. I had no appetite for my favorite dinner, turkey and the standard sides. I could not smell nor taste my favorite dinner.
Then, I started having lower GI problems and continued no appetite an absence of smell/taste. Our HMO ordered basically every diagnostic test known to man. They found nothing.
Then, we had Christmas at another son’s home. He and a grandson were sick in a few days. The son was ill for about 4 weeks. The grandson was well in a few days. Our son had my symptoms for the 4 weeks.
The women in our families never were sick during this time.
We never found what we had. This was weeks before the CV 19 was in our area. Looking back, I think that I and our son had CV19.
You might not get them if you do.
But I’m not lining up to be a lab rat for this one.:-)
One of them has already had shingles & was miserable while it lasted. His didn’t last as long as your episode, which sounds like it hasn’t totally ended yet. I don’t know why he didn’t go back ... figured he’s press his luck, I guess.
Hope yours clears totally soon - best wishes. ~Q
How did they know it was better than getting the virus? My guess is because fear-mongers told them so.
“ I have two close relatives who, within the last year, got shingles (I think) shots...”
Yep, that’s the one. I got ‘em. Felt pretty funky after the first. Second shot not so much, but months later still have a little bump on my skin where I got the shot.
Wow. That sounds like it was scary. Glad you both came through it ok!
Have you given any thought to antibody testing?
Wet AMD? My dad has dry AMD thus far ... at least he doesn’t need injections into the eye. I’m not sure if he’d do it.
They won’t sue successfully due to the makers having immunity not because the shots will be problem free.
There is the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. But how much it pays out I don’t know.
If it’s like having covid19 then what’s the point of taking it?
I did the shingles vax earlier this year, in anticipation that a case of COVID-19 might trigger them in me, and the first does — on the same day I took a synthetic B-12 supplement — just had my lying in bed all day the next day, feverish, chilled with a racing heart rate at times.
Second dose wasn’t anywhere near as bad. Compared to shingles, it was well worth the problems, IMO.
One of the side effects amongst Christians and those on the right will be sterility! Wm Gates gets his wish! Several different vaccines.
Were you on acyclovir? That cleared it up real quickly for me.
Religious exemptions are a blessing. But only in states that have them
That cocktail has now been approved....and you can thank the President personally for that one.
My poor mother had the worst case of shingles the health care team had ever seen, and it was indeed awful. Seeing that removed any reluctance I may have had to take a shingles vaccine. As a matter of fact, I am getting the vaccine again with the newer one.
Seeing my mom like that horrified me.
I was diagnosed with macular degeneration in February 2012. Since then have been going every 1-2 months for eye injections. Not pleasant, but not nearly as bad as it sounds and definitely better than going blind.
I think a lot of people - government AND physicians - haven’t really known what they are dealing with.
Most peoples’ personal doctors are doing the best that they can. (And they have to deal with all sorts of regulations and advisories.)
I had an antibody test the other day. Still waiting on results - but what will it tell me? Even the President’s doc couldn’t tell him how long he might be immune after having the bug. And the possibility of false-positives are great.
I guess this is one of those things in life where ‘you pays yer money and you takes yer chance’, according to your own wisdom. Nothing in life is ever guaranteed.
