Severe cases of Covid-19 have been known to lead to a mysterious condition whereby the body's immune system goes haywire and starts attacking healthy cells, rather than just those that are infected.
This prolonged state of self-sabotage is known as a 'cytokine storm' and can be fatal, but researchers have struggled to understand how it works and how to treat it.
Now new research has looked at the progression of a coronavirus infection in mice and found the cytokine storm is a vicious cycle, which leads to the overproduction of two signalling proteins called tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interferon (INF)-gamma.

Immunologists have discovered possible treatments for COVID-19 using existing therapies.
Scientists at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital have ascertained the process which drives the life-threatening inflammation damage and organ failure which plagues coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. The research suggests that a potential strategy for treatment could be possible using drugs that already exist.
The study, published in the online journal Cell, discovered that the hyperinflammatory immune response connected with COVID-19, lead to multi-organ failure and tissue damage in mice. This was found to be caused by a triggering of the inflammatory cell death pathways. The research determined how this process works, which eventually led to the discovery of potential therapies to disrupt it.
“Understanding the pathways and mechanism driving this inflammation is critical to develop effective treatment strategies,” corresponding author Thirumala-Devi Kanneganti, PhD, said. “This research provides that understanding. We also identified the specific cytokines that activate inflammatory cell death pathways and have considerable potential for treatment of COVID-19.”
Cytokines are small proteins that are secreted by immune cells and help ensure a rapid response to restrict a virus. Some cytokines have been found to trigger inflammation, which explains the high cytokine levels in COVID-19 patients. However, the exact pathways that initiate the cytokines and the molecular mechanisms behind them was unknown. The study found that the cytokine PANoptosis was the main source fueling the inflammation through cell death and inflammatory molecules.
The research concludes that the cytokine-mediated inflammatory cell death process caused by PANoptosis is at the center of the inflammation damage. The cytokine storm releases more cytokines, intensifying systemic inflammation and resulting in more inflammatory molecules. Many cytokine inhibitors are already on the market and can be used for potential treatment of inflammation, making these findings a crucial next step in the fight against COVID-19.
“We have solved a major piece of the cytokine storm mystery by characterizing critical factors responsible for initiating this process, and thereby identifying a unique combination therapy using existing drugs that can be applied in the clinic to save lives,” Kanneganti said.

Potential for repurposing TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma blockers to treat COVID-19
This is rank speculation, but I’ve wondered if these over-reactions in the immune systems of elderly people might be partly triggered by the fact that they are the people who’ve probably had the most flu shots in their lives, and their systems might therefore overreact because they’ve been loaded with too many antibodies. (I’m prepared to be told that this theory is bunk.)

Search mercola and nebulizing food grade hydrogen peroxide to keep the virus out of the lungs from the first symptom. Also helps keep it out of the stomach. I am on day 7 of covid and it’s worked so far doing 4x a day. Plus all the vitamins.

My wife has had it for about 6 days now. I’ve loaded her up with Vitamin D, zinc (after eating) combined with Quercetin and green tea extract (those are zinc ionophores), plus a very good multi-vitamin and 1000 mg of C twice/day. So far, no breathing issues, just nausea Friday and Sunday, loss of taste and smell (starting to come back slightly as of about 2 hours ago) and she feels like she got run over by a truck. If it weren’t for the loss of taste and smell, I would say it was flu. Of course, the test was a PCR one, which I think is worthless because it merely detects the Covid RNA, with no indication of whether it is active or communicable.

so going way back in time to the early days...I remember posting about Enbrel. Dont remember why.
I think it was about Covid....and Alzeimers- but not together.
Enbrel is a tnf-a inhibitor.
IIRC, it is pretty expensive.
I theorized with a family memeber that I could get it because I have psoriasis. But it is only one patch on the knee so might not be severe enough. THere are wicked side effects but as last ditch effort for alzheimers I would try it.
