Taking Your Girlfriend/Boyfriend to the Range

I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen some yahoo give an inexperienced wife or girlfriend a magnum handgun or 12 gauge shotgun without any training regarding grip, stance or other considerations.

Then find it hysterically funny when the lose control, drop the gun or get knocked on their butt.

I went with a friend to a gun club one time. I had never held a gun before and dont know what all those numbers mean. But evidently I have an eye as the target holes were impressive. I especially handled the rifle well. A college son was in a gun club, and was quite proud of his Mommy when he saw the targets.

I’ve found it better to not try to instruct GF/Wives when you are the significant other. They tend to be jittery/nervous. Let someone you trust do it. The Ladies are more relaxed. I was lucky, I sent the Mrs and Her up to the Son in PA. He’s a PA Game Warden and took Her to their Shooting Range, nobody else was there and She did Excellent.

Tips for guys whose girlfriends are taking them to the range for the first time:

First of all....make sure she is not mad at you....

Every woman I've dated over the last 4 years now I've taken to the range, helped them get their FOID cards and in one case (current GF) helped her get her Conceal/Carry license which is required here in HELLINOIS to carry legally.

I do my part to convert every woman over to Pro Second Amendment. That's how we do it.

I am a wise person. I sent my wife to the range with a good friend with plenty of experience. Why? Your significant other, especially if she is your wife will not listen to you. And pretty soon it is all your fault for whatever didn’t go right as she expected.

After she stopped jumping and squeaking when other lanes were shooting, she did very well.

Another thing people do is let their sense of "humor" get the best of them. Playing jokes on a new shooter of either sex is a bad idea but will probably damage the relationship if you are doing it on a first time female shooter.

Women are bombarded by society with the message that "guns are for guys" and a girl who shoots either wants to be a male or is in some other way unnatural.

So the fact that she came along means that she is willing to push back against that conditioning but it also means that she might be on the edge. Playing practical jokes (something that I tend to strongly agree with Robert Heinlein about) is often enough to push her back over the edge.

So if you are unable to keep your sense of humor under control ask someone else to be her teacher.
