Interesting observation. The Brits would say there is no "el" but Americn English would say there is. It just looked wrong to me. I always spelled it "cancelled" and I made "A"s in English/Language Arts

I grew up spelling it “cancelled”, but I am old. There are some other words, e.g., “catalogue” vs. “catlog”.
