It’s possible. Either way, I doubt he did it for the money, but rather the exposure. You don’t get rich litigating defamation suits in the US—the law is HEAVILY defense-friendly. But high profile defamation cases make news, and that can generate business for his personal injury practice, which is where he probably really makes his money.
My point is more that he managed to fool a lot of people into believing that he got a massive settlement for Sandmann when he almost certainly did not.
