A Message from Our Executive Director
Emailed Letter | January 8, 2021 | Debra Futa

Greetings,

The appalling events that unfolded in our nation’s capital on Wednesday have unleashed a host of mixed emotions in our country. The turbulence was the polar opposite of legitimate peaceful protest.

Events on the national stage can often seem very distant from our day-to-day lives, but this challenge to our democracy brought home the importance of civil discourse. As your Public Library, we have the capability and capacity to be one of the places that bring people together. Libraries unite, not divide.

We will continue to seek out ways to help right here in St. Joseph County. We’re one of the safe and trusted places. We have a responsibility to inform, to help educate and to help make lives better. And as part of the public library, we know we’ve all aligned ourselves with the higher purpose of contributing to something that is bigger than ourselves.

While the mob at the capital was frightening on so many levels, it represents a small group of extremists. I’m heartened that it seems to be a wakeup call across party lines. As president-elect Biden noted, we’re working toward the restoration of decency, honor, respect and tolerance. Public libraries have always been a symbol of those values and we will actively work to advance them.

We can’t predict the future but we can promise you that as one of the most democratic institutions in this country, we’ll continue to provide free access to information and lifelong learning for everyone. And we’ll do this hand in hand with all of you. We’re here for the long haul.

Thanks for reading,

-DF

Received this a short time ago. Decided to reply as follows:

-------

Just a bit curious as to why protestations issue forth now as opposed to when violent events occurred in Ferguson, MO, Minneapolis, MN, Portland OR, not to mention the Supreme Court Chambers.

Are you informed as to precisely who acted violently within our nation's Capitol and why? Who do you trust as a reliable news source and why?

As a recipent of government funds it is patently apparent the public library has a vested interest in expanding (while censoring!) public access to that which is deemed fit by its curators.

It is a wonderful thing to have libraries. Each time I drive by the expanding one in South Bend I ask myself, "Is the public even capable or willing to be informed," because by all accounts these days they seem to be willingly misinformed, as your brief missive bears out.

------- Don't want to give too much grief. After all literacy is a good thing.

A true, classic liberal rather than a liberal ideologue.

Vive la difference!

St. Joseph County has a Public Library Executive Something Something? Wow. How much does that gig pay?

Ask for ‘Insurrection for Dummies’ and see what kind of response you get.

It seems even the public library got the memo. Nice to see they are on the bang list.

I heard yesterday that my local library has forgiven all fines, and will no longer levy them. Other penalties will be used...lose check-out rights if stuff is overdue. Pay replacement cost after x number days. “Come back to the library. All is forgiven.” Still swarming with homeless, I’m sure.

Good effort. Next time you may want to consider a different format showing one "library" comment at a time and then rebutting that comment, then on to the next.

Example:

....

Libraries unite, not divide.

Your biased comments were very divisive--as well as being inaccurate...

As president-elect Biden noted, we’re working toward the restoration of decency, honor, respect and tolerance.

This presidential election was "won" by blatant election fraud.

https://hereistheevidence.com/

Your comment is a bit like quoting John Dillinger calling for "decency, honor, respect and tolerance" after he robbed the local bank.

I found it deeply offensive, and far below the standards I would expect of a public library.....

While the mob at the capital was frightening on so many levels, it represents a small group of extremists.

Who, AOC, Ilhan Omar and company? They're a small group of extremists in the capital.

As president-elect Biden noted, we’re working toward the restoration of decency, honor, respect and tolerance.

So you think it needs restoring because...what? the last four years lacked decency, honor, respect and tolerance? You must mean the Kavanaugh hearings, the Russia hoax, the scorn and vilification of Trump and his voters, and the bias and censorship from media and Big Tech.

Every librarian that I know is staunchly anti-censorship. That includes my wife who is a collections manager. But as I I remind her, the entire upper management could be replaced, Union protections notwithstanding.

The day will come when their anti-censorship convictions are put to the test.

Library aides are another matter, however.

Ummm... No you're not. What you're "working on" is something you'll all regret for the rest of your lives. Too bad you so-called intellectual folks aren't wise enough to learn from history and so are doomed to repeat it.

Maybe it’t time to burn a couple go books.

For Debra’s sake of course.

Some suggestions:

Dreams from My Father - Obamao.

It takes a village - Fat Bottomed Girl.

That is good to hear. A robust local library truly is a blessing. It just galls me that public education and lazy parenting have produced of late a public largely incapable of the simplest, respectful, cogent discourse.
