Bad experiences with food, like a dodgy curry that makes us ill for days, triggers a switch in our brains that means we never want to eat it again, a study reveals.
UK researchers have managed to replicate the effect of a negative experience on eating behaviour, using sugar-loving snails as models in the lab.
They used 'aversive training', which involved tapping the snails on the head when sugar appeared, as a proxy for food poisoning in humans, while being filmed.
Aversive training flicked an appetite-suppressing switch that meant the snails refused to feed on the sugar, even when hungry.
The experts think something similar is happening, leading to 'persistent physiological change' that's specific to a certain food for the rest of our lives.

I need this happen with chips, bread, crackers, and other high carb foods..... just saying!
I suppose there IS such a thing as bad curry...
I always wanted to try the Saturday Curry bar at
the Raffles hotel in Singapore.
30 different curries!
When my dad was in the Navy he was a cooks helper. He loved shrimp. They opened a 5 gallon can and he gorged himself on them. It was years before he could eat shrimp again.
Sometimes Aversion Therapy works, other times, you still want whatever it was that caused the commotion, just as soon as all the swelling goes down.
I can be like that about Pickled Jalopeno Peppers.
Too many of them too many days in a row will
“scald my stomach”, but a week or so later, after I have served my penance, I want some more again.
They provide a kick to the meal.
Green beans for me, bit into one in elementary school and it had a worm in it.
Havent had one in over 47 years.
As Kipling said in “Kim”.
“There’s no such thing as religion when talking about...
...good curry!”
Btw, one thing to have on hand that is the miracle cure for this issue is activated charcoal. Also helpful to use on dogs when they eat something they should not eat.
I had that happen with Democrats.
Went to a Mike Dukakis rally in San Francisco in 1988. Heard Barbara Boxer speak; and I could never listen to a Democrat again.
Wow, so that's all I've got to do to get rid of my snails?!
I wound up in the hospital after eating raw clams. As soon as they heard what I ate, they said I’d live.
We used to be able to by jalapenos stuffed with shrimp
and sometimes we would make our own stuffed with peanut
butter.
Remember to wear gloves when cleaning and stuffing them
other wise you’ll regret it.
I used to love stuffed green olives until I took a few bottles with me while camping/fishing at the beach one time.
Got sicker than a dog and puked up every last ounce of nutrition in my body an slept 20 hours in one day.
The one funny part of it was when I was on my hands and knees puking at the high tide line and a tourist woman expressed her concern to me that I had sunstroke. I tried to answer and came close to puking on her feet.
To this day green olives disgust me.
I’ve had this reaction the mainstream news, music, and movies.

This made me laugh..... the good old days. He was the worst campaign I had ever seen up until Biden in 2020.
That tank picture still cracks me up.
Ate a bad hot dog in high school, sick for 10 days.
Just the smell of a hotdog makes me nauseous to this day, 40 years later.
Ate it in a nice restaurant and spent the next two days throwing up my toenails.
Love asparagus.
Love cream soup.
Can not even think about cream of asparagus soup with out feeling ill.
When I break up a dried Jalapeno to sprinkle over a burrito, I have to, HAVE TO remember to wash my hands with soap and hot water before sitting down to eat, for the same reasons you describe. Otherwise, it’s Pain City in the corners of my eyes.
Tequila
I had this happen with mussels. I could eat them fine until I got food poisoning.
It was buffet cabbage rolls for me. I don’t miss them at all. ha ha.
