Section of Hawthorne Blvd. where Tiger Woods crashed is a ‘hotspot’ for accidents, officials say

The part of Hawthorne Boulevard where Tiger Woods lost control of his SUV Tuesday and was seriously injured in a rollover crash is a steep, winding road described by locals and officials as a “hotspot” for car crashes.

At the intersection where Woods crashed, Hawthorne Boulevard forms the border of Rancho Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills Estates — part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula known for tony gated neighborhoods, cliffside vistas and winding seaside roads.

One man who lives in the area told KTLA Tuesday that the stretch of road is dangerous if you’re not careful.

“The one thing that all of us in this area recognize is we go through brakes a lot,” he said. “Because of this grade and the speed you pick up, you typically have to ride your brakes as you’re coming down.”

It’s easy to hit 65 mph if you’re traveling a typical speed and not riding your brakes, he said. Meanwhile, the road curves, “and if you’re not paying attention it’s easy to miss that turn, and/or overcorrect and find yourself in a bad situation.”

The speed limit in the area is 45 mph, but Gonzalez said he’ll sometimes catch people going 80 mph.

“People see a nice stretch of road, and maybe they’re not watching the speedometer, or maybe they’re in a hurry,” he said.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said there were no skid marks or signs of braking at the crash site, and he apparently first crashed into the center median where a “Welcome to Rolling Hills Estates” sign sits.

I drove through the intersection of Hawthorne Blvd and Blackhorse Road twice...No, I was not speeding.

Hawthorne Blvd starts in Lennox, an area near Los Angeles International Airport...Go south on Hawthorne Blvd and you pass through Torrance...Then you will end up in Rancho Palos Verdes...

It’s basically 45mph zone. Stupid people take it at 75+ mph.

Even cars with automatic transmissions have two lower gears you can shift into so you don’t have to ride your breaks. C’mon, people!

Almost every town in the U.S. has it’s own
Deadman’s Curve. Some love it, some hate it, others just accept the road as is and get used to it.
In my area (Bay Area near San Fran), there is the Stinson Beach area. Absolutely beautiful vistas, but I have never gotten used to the long curves around those mountains.
I stay outta the bushes.

The problem isn’t the infrastructure at this particular venue. The problem lies with people. You can’t fix stupid or near fatal neglect.

Yes, the road is fine. 4 lanes with a nice median separating them. Problem is when you are staring at your phone, you don’t notice turns. Literally no possible way to screw up this gentle bend, even at 65mph, unless you aren’t looking.

I agree about the adequate infrastructure. However, the problem with 65 at this venue is there is PV north and Blackhorse cross traffic. At 65 there are going to be a lot of injury/fatal collisions at those intersections. Especially on the northbound side as speeds are a bit greater due to the grade.

Drama queen much? I have friends who live near here and drive this routinely. You don’t have to “ride your brakes” if you actually know how to drive a car. This is a case of the media finding the dumbest witness who will support their dogma. My friend was asking what round would be best to take down the media copters hovering all day today.

Hawthorne Blvd. and Crenshaw Blvd. both END in Palos Verdes, or begin, whichever way you see it..

I've driven that stretch of Hawthorne HUNDREDS of times and it's not the road's fault for crashes, it's the DRIVER'S fault and I'll BET Tiger was texting or reading a text then was rudely interrupted with the median strike then the flipping and rolling..

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL, AND ON THE ROAD, TIGER!!!

Back in my youth, my buddy went down that stretch of Hawthorne in his lowered '79 Ford Fiesta going 100mph.. Talk about "white knuckle", yikes! Wished I hadn't been in the car!

Palos Verdes Peninsula is a great area...Public schools are actually OK in that area...There is a private school in that area...Chadwick School...

I think that trees at that area of that two lane road cast shaddows that obscured the curve in the road. Tiger should have seen that curve and slowed down in time. Obviously he was into it so fast he jumped the divider, hit a sign post and propelled across two lanes of oncoming traffic and into the bushes. The momentum was so great that he cut down a tree that caused his vehicle to flip end for end.

Yep. That’s the song I was thinking of!
You won’t catch me on such a road unless I made the wrong turn and can’t find the exit.
