WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Friday signaled support to replace decades-old authorizations for the use of military force in the Middle East, a little more than a week after he relied on the authorizations to carry out a retaliatory airstrike against Iranian-backed militia in eastern Syria.
The Biden administration announced its position after a bipartisan bill was introduced earlier this week that would repeal the 1991 and 2002 authorizations for the wars in Iraq that presidents from both parties have relied on for legal justification to carry out strikes in the region.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Biden was committed to working with Congress to “ensure that the authorizations for the use of military force currently on the books are replaced with a narrow and specific framework that will ensure we can protect Americans from terrorist threats while ending the forever wars.”
Biden spurred bipartisan backlash last week after he ordered the strikes against facilities used by Kataib Hezbollah. The strikes were in response to a rocket attack earlier in February targeting U.S. troops and civilian personnel in northern Iraq without first seeking congressional approval. The U.S. has blamed the militia for numerous attacks targeting U.S. personnel and interests in Iraq in the past.

Kommiela Harris is already taking calls from foreign leaders.
Looks like the Democrat Party Central Committee has decided that she will be the person acting on their behalf as the FedGuv’s Chief Executive.
I’m guessing there’s some kind of provision that when there’s a real crisis and we’re at defcon1, the president still has full singular authority.
Look for clues that this law is just a trinket.
This War Powers act is LONG overdue for rescission.
And it’s a good thing if it happens.
And it has nothing to do with Biden.
Yep, it was a coup.
Dance, Silly Puppet, Dance!................
The Dems want a committee to ‘share’ the power....................
I'll guess biden knows about his incompetency, so does jill and neither one wants Commie Law Harass Us to sit as potus, so ...
They most certainly will. Our representatives couldn’t agree on what day it is let alone whether to go to war or not. The United States, the New World, is being weakened and undermined by the old world. This is just one of many examples. I assure you, China will have no democratic processes interfering with its war fighting.
The war powers act should be repealed in total. Return the power to wage war back into the hands of only congress where it belongs.
I only wish the Republicans had the courage to lead on that one. But alas there are too many globalists and Neocons in the party to get any traction on that.
BS.
The power is already laid out and well developed.
The President has the power to order the military around for short term actions and the Congress can pull back any action legislatively as needed
This going to Congress first is BS.
Absolutely
I expect the Born Again Pacifists at FR will be thrilled
lol. neocons are the (not really) new commie symps.
hey, along as it fits on a bumpersticker.
We should just start writing the new laws in Chinese, just to make sure we don’t lose anything in translation. We don’t want to upset the bosses.
If that woman loved her husband she would stopped him from making a fool of himself over and over again.
As I understand Biden’s powers would not be removed - they would be shared. Sort of a Gang of Four type deal.
The 9/11 use-of-force authorization now has us in six or seven countries, fighting in Africa, invading Syria, and things well beyond the scope of 9/11.
They are only repealing the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) passed to support Bush 41 and Bush 43’s wars in Iraq. Note they are not withdrawing the troops, just taking away Biden’s ability to use them in Iraq and Syria. This is just push back for the strikes in Syria last week. Also, they are not trying to repeal Public Law 107–40, the AUMF for the “Global War on Terror”, and certainly not the War Powers Act.
Congress should never give open ended support for use of force like they did with these two resolutions. Either declare war or don’t.
Well, you know the answer to THAT one.
