17 year old kids and 700 horsepower engines do not mix well.

I’d think that the crash rate of a male 17 year old behind the wheel of an exotic sports car is approaching 100%

I always think of P.J. O’Rourke’s quote that Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.

I’m working on a Saturn for my grandson.
125 horsepower (well that was 100,000 miles ago).

Makes me glad my first car was a breakneck 56 horsepower... when new. It mellowed in its old age by the time I got it. When I traded it in for something with 82 HP I thought I was a Daytona driver.

I hate to admit this, but I did some really stupid things with cars after I got my license at 16. I damaged my father’s car at 17; as a result, I was, rightly, grounded for 6 months. Luckily, I did not hit another car and no one in my car was hurt; however, the repair bill for my Dad’s car was almost $1000 (which was big money in those days).

Anyway, I wised up fast after that one. I was not a dumb kid, but probably too damn immature to drive at 16/17. One of the biggest blessings of my life is that no one was hurt in my accident. Without getting into too many detail, someone easily could have been. I was extremely lucky to get away with only a grounding.

Another one that doesn’t mix well is kids under 25 and 650 CC motorcycles. It’s that particular age and displacement.

When I was 16 I had a sports car that would run the quarter in 10 seconds and top out over 160 mph and when appropriate I had that verified on the circle track to be officially 160mph + Racing is for the track age is not a factor.
