To make up for lack of interaction under Covid-19 restrictions, apes at zoos 150km apart can now watch each others’ daily lives on big screens
Humans might be tiring of video calls, Zoom birthdays and streamed performances, but the chimps at two Czech zoos are just starting to enjoy their new live online link-up.
To make up for the lack of interaction with visitors since the attractions closed in December under Covid-19 restrictions, the chimpanzees at Safari Park Dvur Kralove and the troop at a zoo 150km away in in Brno, can now watch one another’s daily lives on giant screens.
There are no mute-button disasters because the sound is off, but there has already been plenty of interest in what the distant cousins are up to since the project got under way last week.
“At the beginning they approached the screen with defensive or threatening gestures, there was interaction,” said Gabriela Linhartova, ape keeper at Dvur Kralove, 135km east of Prague.
“It has since moved into the mode of ‘I am in the movies’ or ‘I am watching TV’. When they see some tense situations, it gets them up off the couch, like us when we watch a live sport event.”
The chimpanzees have also adopted other human behaviours such as grabbing snacks like nuts to chew on while watching the action.

They are probably putting this out now to distract us from the article of Czech police tackling the non-masked father in front of his toddler.
When I was a zookeeper, I saw female chimps make earrings out of wire, make skirts, etc. I’m sure they’ve been bored out of their gourds with this lockdown.

Since the election I’ve talked with some State Department and CIA folks and they are happy with the Democrats but upset with Biden’s foreign policy. Everyone I know is happy the election was stolen.
Special Ops guys I know, some are still military and others are contracted, think the democrats are in office illegally at Potus/Senate control. They are not high on this administration.
The NCOs and enlisted lower ranks don’t see any future in the military. They think SecDef is a hack. The race relations stuff is a joke but no joking matter.
A black SF instructor says he is Green, not black. He said the military is being ruined by the democrats. Everyone he knows hates Biden.
The DNC is going to have to find a way to keep the white guys.
If America’s colleges are any indication, the white guys dropped out in large numbers years ago due to liberalism - the same will happen in the military.
Is it possible to promote women, gays, minorities on merit if there are no white guys? That’s the 64 million dollar question that doesn’t need answering.
More interesting would be to see the males’ reaction to Mata!
