And no one was infected by any insidious bat viruses while they were doing all this.

4300 years wouldn’t even be an eyeblink in Earth time. I used to live near Stone Mountain, which was formed underground and it took 285 million years for the land around it to erode so it came to its present form. And that’s not even old.

There was a spike in plant sterols in the bats' diet around a thousand years ago, the researchers found – corresponding with the Medieval Warm Period (900-1,300 CE), when it's thought the Americas were particularly dry. Another plant sterol spike was found from around 1,350 BCE, at a time known as the Minoan Warm Period.

I’d rather work in water sediments, ice cores or tree rings than bat poop.

Oldest Living Organism: Ancient Bacteria

"October, 1999; 250-million-year-old bacteria were found in ancient sea salt beneath Carlsbad, New Mexico. The microscopic organisms were revived in a laboratory after being in 'suspended animation', encased in a hard-shelled spore, for an estimated 250 million years. The species has not been identified, but is referred to as strain 2-9-3, or B. permians."

LIVING!
