I live in a rural area on a farm. No neighbors in sight no matter which direction I look. I moved out of the big city when I retired so I wouldn't have any neighbors to deal with.

I like it that way.

I’ll live next door to the cemetery. Nice and peaceful/quiet.

What about the things that go bump in the night, and the soft taps on your back, and the whispering in your ears from the unseen?

Trust me on this. There are many active and former LEOs in this area as well as a ton of Vets (mostly Marines, such as myself). On any given afternoon or evening, weekends or not, the “sounds of freedom” can be heard. Being the wide open spaces that we live in, putting some rounds down range is as common as the chickens crowing and the dogs barking.

We have no intention at all in changing that reality. The bad guys know it as well and cut a wide path around here.

Did you misplace the open parenthesis mark?

I prefer this sign which is on the front gate to my farm.

Don't disparage the entire state of FL because of the bad location you lived in.

My wife and I retired ten years ago to 30 acres in the country in rural Florida.

No state income taxes. No property taxes on our land essentially because of our agricultural exemption. We don't have any close neighbors or crime. It's peaceful here on the farm.

But we were stationed in Missouri in the Air Force. Between the two tornadoes we survived, the freezing ass cold winters with deep snow and black ice and the record rains of 12" and 16" two days in a row that flooded everything in sight, the place was not exactly a paradise itself. No place is. Not even Florida. We've had two hurricanes since we moved here.

But not all of Florida is like whatever city or town you lived in. Living in the cities is the problem nowadays, no matter what state you are in.

Can’t pick either of them, because one is dead, and the other soon will be.

Oh I know and have been to North FL and it’s very similar to rural MO, aside from the weather. Regardless, we still couldn’t afford it. That’s the whole east coast really. My mother-in-law paid $65k for 5 acres in rural North FL. We bought 8 acres here in MO for $20k and then bought the adjoining 7 acres for $15k. They also paid thousands in building permits because they’re barely within Alachua, same county as Gainsville, while we have no codes, zoning or restrictions.

We pay $40-50 in income taxes and get the full amount back every year.

We lived in Ctrl FL and most people there are not from there.

Well, I’ll stick with my location too in the beautiful Blue Ridge of Virginia amongst the trees, deer, bears, etc. :) But we were told to choose! LOL.

Alachua county is expensive because it is run by liberal democRATS. They have a large demographic of blacks and liberals from the university. The only county in north Florida with a democRAT representative. Their gas tax is more expensive than any county around them. Gainesville is like an Austin, TX or Boulder, CO or Madison, WI. All liberal enclaves.

Your mother-in-law just picked the wrong county to live in.

Well she did go to an Obama campaign rally in 2007 so she’s where she fits in.

I actually do live next door to a cemetery.

Way back in the early 2010’s, I went to the county appraisal office to refute the appraisal and subsequent taxes I would have to pay.

The lady I discussed my house with asked, and I quote, “Do they still plant people there?”. In the cemetery, do they plant people.

/smh
