Cops in the UK arrest suspects with knives all the time. How many of those suspects end up dead? Just about none of them. Why? Because most UK cops aren't armed. So how do they do it? By waiting until backup arrives in overwhelming numbers and then they baton the guy into submission if he doesn't surrender. They often surrender though because of the overwhelming numbers against.
The only person that guy was threatening was the cop. Could the cop have retreated a safer distance the moment he saw the knife and then waited until the odds were better? Sure.
Screw that! Eliminate that cancer from the gene pool most ricky-tic!!
And what would happen if the cop had simply waited for backup, and the suspect decided to quickly carjack some lady, put a knife to her throat and kidnapped her? And all this would be on video, with the cop standing there waiting for, "Backup".
Correct, the cop approached too close to the suspect, then didn’t back off far enough after seeing the knife. He should have backed off 20 feet. As soon as the suspect made a threatening move, the cop was in an untenable position and had to shoot.
Some believe knives are actually more deadly than guns in close quarters, since a gun has to hit CNS or a major artery or vein to kill, and all you are working with is a pinpoint penetration. A sharp knife slashes and creates wounds more likely to hit major blood pathways, and you can stab, and with a decent sized knife and a twist get a bigger wound channel. The difference is kind of like the difference between an ice pick and a chainsaw.
To say cops should have waited until they had numbers and rushed the guy is like saying a cop should view a daily slash that might kill him as a regular part of his job, just to save some psycho who is maybe going to slash your kid one day at the store because he was in a mood.
It takes nothing is a cop asks you to stop, to stop and talk with him. Good people shouldn’t have to risk death because a savage portion of the population wants the right to be above the laws which constrain us.
I’d give this cop a metal for making the world a better place, and move on. Because practically, that is what he did.
And then the bum runs over and stabs a couple passerbys as the cop is chasing after him trying to reengage.

I think the world is likely better off without anyone stupid enough to pull a knife on a cop.
