Authorities say a Southern California man is recovering after he was bitten by a rattlesnake when he tried to pick up the poisonous reptile using barbecue tongs
A Southern California man is recovering after he was bitten by a rattlesnake when he tried to pick up the poisonous reptile using barbecue tongs, authorities said.
The man spotted the snake Saturday evening near his home in the Sycamore Creek community of Corona and was worried about it coming into contact with children, according to a statement from Riverside County Animal Services.
When he tried to remove the rattler using the tongs, the snake struck and bit him on the hand, Animal Services spokesman John Welsh said. The man, who was not identified, was treated at a hospital and later released.
"He told me that he was feeling remarkably well," Welsh said Tuesday. “He said he definitely felt that he had dodged a bullet.”
Rattlesnake bites are painful and in rare cases can be fatal.
After the man was taken away by ambulance, a crowd gathered as Animal Services Officer Mike McGee removed the snake.
“Some of the children were saying, ‘bye, Mr. Snake,’ ” McGee said.
The reptile was later euthanized.

At least put on an oven mitt if you’re going to use BBQ tong to handle rattle snakes.
Euthanized!
Funny, I kilt a
“Buzz Worm” yesterday
with an empty
Soup Can.
A feisty Footlong!
Bigger than that
Calls for my Shovel.
He should have applied the barbecue sauce to the snake first, then using the tongs would work.
Really. Bbq tongs. At the age of 6, I used a shovel on a rattlesnake. Later on, I used a .22. Much later, I used a shotgun. I cannot imagine thinking that tongs are the best solution available.
I keep a long handled flat shovel to chop the head off the rattlesnake. Or if I have time my .22 with snake shot.
>> near his home in the Sycamore Creek community of Corona
Almost became another Corona casualty.
Chew carefully... not good for the fillings.
Dumbass. Throw ice on it from a distance, then once lethargic, pick it up and place in box or bucket (or dispatch).
Tastes like chicken.
I shot a rattler with 22 snake shot a couple of weeks back; sucker just wouldn’t die, had to chop the head off with a shovel...
Only about 2 feet long, not enough there to bother cleaning for the BBQ; just tossed it out into the desert for the vultures.
i used my f250 to run over one on the road in front of my place yesterday...
Looks like the snake was a bit rare and underdone.
Should have turned up the heat a bit.
Tastes just like chicken.
Never ate one that tasted like chicken, always tastes like snake; yummy!
Shovel is good if it is handy. I had a 5 foot long fat blue green racer come up out of a hole in the ground that I was watering. It shot up straight. I kept hitting it hard with the hose stream, it curled and twisted and writhed and then I grabbed a close by big rock and hit it in the head a couple of times. Snakes are left alone unless they get near the house.
Dumb butt. You chop their little heads off with a long handle shovel.
Thought those were Cigars at first.....
Hope he never comes across a cotton mouth.
In western Oklahoma we catch them, put in gunnysacks. After freezing we skin and use meat for stir fry tacos, yummy. We will sell the skins to boot makers. Western diamond backs are plentiful In the white gypsum canyons. Can catch all year long where there is warmth. Summer time sucks because it’s hot and they are fast. Lots of fun and adrenaline. Just have to watch for copperheads; they don’t warn you. Catching snakes for 35 years and never been even close to a bite.
