Confrontations between Israeli security forces and protesters have been escalating for weeks. The clashes started at the beginning of Ramadan, almost a month ago, when Israeli police put up barriers to stop people sitting in the Damascus Gate plaza, a popular gathering area during Ramadan.
The unrest erupted into serious violence over the weekend, and it got worse on Monday. The Palestinian Red Crescent said 331 Palestinians were injured in a crackdown on worshipers at al-Aqsa mosque on Monday alone. Seven people were left in critical condition, according to the medical group.

they are (properly) termed the Israeli Defense Forces

yes, just like in USA when the National Guard has to be called up, sometimes it may happen that the IDF or its reserves need to be asked to help end a Muslim terrorist riot or large-scale Islamic threat to citizens and tourists
Given the scope and vicious threatening nature, and outright violent attacks against innocent people, my personal guess is that some sort of serious police or police/IDF action will be necessary to restore peace and safety for people there. Probably hundreds of casualties will occur? We will see if the authorities can figure out how to terminate the terrorism and restore safe streets without a significant number of casualties. If they can, superduper. It just does not look like it will be possible, is all, so I am prepared to read about large scale deaths and injuries (with tons of “horrible” videos on the boob toob). we will see. we can hope for the best.
One way or the other, the Muslim threats to and within Israel need to be ended, we are all sick and tired of these savages hurting innocent people all the time. Send them home to Arabia (and Egypt in the case of Gaza), now!
