Actor Norman Lloyd has died at the age of 106.

Lloyd's son, Michael Lloyd, said his father died Tuesday at his home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Lloyd was known for playing Mr. Nolan in "Dead Poet's Society" and was nominated for two Emmy awards for producing the TV series "The Name of the Game" in 1970 and the made-for-television movie "Steambath" in 1974.

His acting days date clear back to Orson Welles’ Mercury Theatre troupe and was part of its very first production: a Broadway adaptation of "Julius Caesar" originally by William Shakespeare.

There and in other shows Norman Lloyd often played roles infused with wisdom and moral authority. Given his work and success as a director and producer, my guess is that it came naturally to him.

Nobody ever talked about his resemblance to Alan Rickman...

Was he the doctor in Julia? A TV show with first female black lead?

Just checked the IMDB, that was Lloyd Nolan who played the doctor in that show.

Lloyd Nolan was also in a couple of my favourites “Airport” and “Hannah and Her Sisters”.

The scene where he slips out of Bob Commings grip and falls from the Statue of Liberty is an iconic film classic.

The scene where he slips out of Bob Commings grip and falls from the Statue of Liberty is an iconic film classic.

When Alfred Hitchcock was reviewing the rushes, he commented "He should have used a better tailor."

From IMDB: "The famous shot of Frank Fry (Norman Lloyd) falling from the Statue of Liberty was an optical illusion. Instead of falling away from the camera, Lloyd was actually leaning back on a saddle, while the camera moved upward and away from him."
