Cuban goes to an American Supermarket for the first time. From socialist Cuba where lines are long, products are scarce, and the constant struggle finding basic necessities has become an everyday normality, Yoel sees an American supermarket for the first time leaving the island.

PLEASE TURN ON SUBTITLES

What is like to be cuban in socialist Cuba and then come to the United States?

This is a very emotional and traumatic experience for many cubans who are not used to an abundance of food, the colors of the store, and the guilt of their family back home who cannot experience this.

One of my favorite movie scenes was from the movie “Moscow On The Hudson” where the character played by Robin Williams, a Communist back in the eighties comes to America and sees an American grocery store for the first time...and they have to call an ambulance for him.

I used to work with a guy back in the early 1980s who lived in Poland until he was 13. He was roughly my age so his family must have come to the US around 1970. I asked what was the first impression of the US that sticks most in mind. His answer “ a Grocery store !”.

It was traumatic for him because he was so sad for the people of Cuba. It hurt him to those things that his countrymen didn’t have, and probably had never seen in their entire lives.

I was sad to see how he went so quickly from astonishment, holding up a frozen pizza and saying it could be hung on the wall, to sadness at the full realization of what has been done to his country since 1959.

How sad.

If they had half a brain, they would turn Cuba into a Caribbean paradise with great hotels and entertainment, and harness the potential of Cubans for business and industry, because the Cubans I have known are hard working and intelligent.

But they don’t. And so the poverty continues.

Yes, I remember seeing video of East Germans coming to West Berlin after the wall came down. These were adults that had never seen a banana.

Someone should tie those brain-dead celebs to chairs and make them watch this. Of course, many of them may be aware, but they are Communist stooges.

A heart warming story, but, since 1980, most Cuban immigrants have been Democrats.

Most of the 1960 Cubans traced their ancestors to Europe. They became Cuba's professional class and business owners. They brought their skills and their productive energy to south Florida. They voted heavily Republican.

The arrivals since 1980 trace their ancestors to Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. They vote about 70% Democrat.

That completely rings true to me. My wife went on a trip to Finland with my mother back around 1989, and they took a ferry over to Estonia.

My wife (and mother) said it was the most depressing place, huge gray, eroding apartment buildings, and as I was describing this video to my wife, she mentioned a store she went into that had a turnip. One turnip.

I must have been exposed to an enclave, because the ones I have known were so anti-Castro, Communist, and Democrat that they would nearly spit on the ground inside a house at the mention of the subject.

Sadly, though, you may be right in some respects, given the huge numbers of certain types of people who were released to leave in the various exoduses...grifters, criminals, no-loads.

Democrat constituency.

I can’t figure out why he said he was insulted, or it was insulting, that they have so little in Cuba, and the U.S. has so much. I don’t know if we are insulting him because we have so much, or if Cuba is insulting him because they have so little due to their Communist politics.

The video was interesting. We’ve had missionary friends through the years who’ve brought people back to the states with them to visit. It was the grocery stores that wowed them.

I think the East Germans have dicked up Germany. West Germany was a fine nation and a good friend of the US. The East Germans have brought their Communist thinking with them, kinda like when Californians come to Texas.

We hosted a high school Polish foreign exchange student in 1999. Even though the Soviets had been gone for almost 10 years, she was still amazed at our stores.

It took her forever to shop since she was not used to having so many choices.

And every single year, millions of people who voted for communism in their own countries (Venezuelan, Cubans, Nicaraguans, etc.) are now coming here and voting the same way.

Under CCP Puppet Biden, it won’t be long for the USA to resemble one of these communist $hit hole countries. Where will the cockroaches go then?

There is a very large concentration of 1980+ Cubans in the metro New York City area.

150,000 in the 2010 Census - the largest group outside south Florida.

Every Congressional District in that region is massively Democrat.

I grew up in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (1959-65). Back then, Cubans would be allowed to come on base during the day to work. Castro took most of their wages of course. But many only came to eat. That way, their food at home would go to their families.

The Naval Base is small, only 45 square miles. One Cuban woman told me you could feed the entire nation of Cuba with the scraps from the tables on the Naval Base.

I heard of a man from a Soviet nation who came to the states. He froze up in the supermarket, saying he didn’t know which items he was supposed to buy. His daughter had to explain he could buy whatever he wanted: the government doesn’t tell you what to buy.

I believe it's emotionally overwhelming for those who have only known empty shelves.

Raised in a rural small town I recall it was a big deal to travel 25 miles to go to a Pizza Restaurant...... And growing up I once traveled and saw for the first time a big dept store with an escalator.....I couldn't believe it! It's quite intimidating. One of the things people coming here see that's very hard is all the wasted food. You see they think of all those in their country that barely get by and often no food choices at all.
