Predictive policing strategies for children face pushback
NBC News ^ | June 6, 2021, 6:00 AM | Olivia Solon and Cyrus Farivar

Five months after Robert Jones, a 44-year-old aerospace process auditor, moved to what he described as a “really nice” neighborhood of Gulf Harbors in Pasco County, Florida, with his girlfriend and four kids, “seven or eight” police cars showed up at his door.

Officers said they had heard about his then-16-year-old son Bobby’s school delinquency from colleagues in Pinellas County, where the family previously lived, and wanted to make sure he understood that the Pasco Sheriff’s Office did things a little differently, Jones recalled.

What Jones didn’t realize at the time was that his son had been identified as a target by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office's “intelligence-led” policing program. Police had gathered records of Bobby’s previous interactions with law enforcement and were using his history to predict that he would be a troublemaker in Pasco County.

This is a long read but addresses issues with children, school, police, parents. Something to be aware of and consideration as to how to address the problem of drugs among the youth.

For some reason this, this reminds me of St. Skittles.

So little 16-year-old Bobby had previous interactions (note the plural) with cops at his old home. Maybe the Pasco County police made the visit to prevent his being a troublemaker in his new home.

Criminals will repeat their crimes.

Way too long. Did not read it all. But I read enough to conclude the police overreacted and harrassed this family without mercy. This happened back in 2015 and 2016, long before the ‘war on Cops’ became the unfortunate norm in many cities. I can’t imaging this happening now, except with families too afraid to take a stand and say ‘Enough!!”

All the police had to do was contact the father in a more subtle, dignified manner. There was no need for a swarm of police cars to appear at their new home because of the son’s past record. They could have sent an email and invited the dad for a face to face meeting at the station.
What are their new neighbors supposed to think, seeing all those police on their doorstep? Unforced errors were made.

Let’s see. He had smoked MJ and gotten in a fight at school. Oh, gee, we have a hardened criminal here...NOT! What the Pasco Sheriff Office did was to create a situation that escalated things, creating a harassment situation to run the family out of the county.

If you read it to the end, Bobby is currently in jail awaiting trial on an assault charge. Looks like the prediction was acurate

What I see here is these a$$hole cops showed up to harass a kid and family who had not done one single thing wrong in their jurisdiction.

The problem here is an out of control police department who think it’s their job to run people out of town.

And a pox on you FReepers for endorsing this tyranny and then whining when the same rogue cops crap all over your gun rights.

Thanks for posting. I’ll offer my personal rules for police interaction if they arrive at my house:
Do not open door. Open window and initiate verbal contact.
Ask their name and the agency they are with. Write this down.
Ask if they have a warrant to search or to arrest
If no, I’d tell them “I fully intend to cooperate, as soon as my attorney has had a chance to speak with you first. Please leave your business card and I’ll have him call you promptly.”
Close window and end interaction.

All this happened five years ago in one county, now he is a 21 year old adult that is in jail in another county awaiting trial for assault. It sounds like Jr. has behavior issues wherever he goes. Interesting that he can’t bail out.

I am completely against predictive analytics. Here's the deal. Police must provide probable cause to obtain a warrant. Predictive analytics is not probable cause. According to the article, the police did not have a search warrant or at least it is in dispute. Exactly what evidence did the police have to get a search warrant?

Also this getting expelled from school over a fight is complete BS. Boys are growing up to be pussies. It is all a part of feminization. Boys get into fights. It happens, at least when I was a kid it did and no one's life got ruined because of it. Suspended from school, yes. Kicked out of school, no. As for a bag of weed, they better start kicking out 40%+ of the kids in high school then. There are other ways of dealing with kids than having government ruin their lives.

That treatment seems to be aimed at bringing about the fulfilment of their predictions. All of this “interaction” will be on the kid’s record and will follow him everywhere for life, even if the record is “expunged.” No record is ever actually expunged. The boy is identified as a potential criminal so the machinery goes into gear to make sure he becomes one. It’s like the auto mechanic who fixes your car and nicks a brake line to ensure that you will be repeat business.

If pot is legal in CA, this seems like persecution of someone whose crime is to be 2 years underage for consumption. To be discouraged perhaps, but this was over the top heavy handed.

I wonder if the town is otherwise so safe that the cops have nothing better to do. Or, is this happening because some government money was thrown at a program, and the local department needs to do something to justify their grant money?

“You’re okay with that?”

I was speculating on the cops’ motivation for the visit, that’s all. I don’t really know what they had in mind. But if it were to prevent a kid from getting in to further trouble, I don’t see the problem. I didn’t read the article (naturally!). Was the kid arrested during the visit?

Many years ago I worked with delinquents. Nearly all of them were already on the road to a life of crime and incarceration. It would be a good thing to try and change that trajectory.

In any case, juveniles are treated completely differently in law than adults. The juvenile justice system is supposed to try and turn kids’ lives around as opposed to punish them for what they’ve done. (I used ‘supposed’ on purpose.) Juvenile authorities can detain juveniles for non crimes. This is especially true for girls. They don’t often because of expense, but they can.

“maybe our current left fascist government could compile lists and pay visits too”

I’m sure they’d like to and quite possibly are doing it. But there’s a big difference. Police, the government, cannot detain adults based on what they think someone is likely to do. At least as long as our Constitution is intact.
