Consumer demand has come roaring back for restaurant meals, but the workforce has been slower to return, pushing eateries to sweeten the deal. In May, the leisure and hospitality industries added 292,000 jobs, but employment in those fields is still down by 2.5 million compared with pre-pandemic levels, according to the Department of Labor.
In May, Chipotle said that it would raise hourly wages for its restaurant workers to reach an average of $15 an hour by the end of June. Company executives said at the Baird Global Consumer, Technology & Services Conference that they would be passing along the price of raising pay to consumers.
CEO Brian Niccol said the company prefers not to raise its prices but that the move made sense in this scenario.
The timing of the price hikes coincides with rising ingredient costs across the restaurant industry as suppliers grapple with the return of demand. For now, Chipotle isn’t planning on further price increases.

During the pandemic, the Chipotle corporate shills decided to roll out a digital order system, even when you could enter restaurants, they kept up with the system. No big whoop right? Well, to order a burrito using this system you have to give them both a phone number and an email address along with your credit card. Used to be all you needed was money, but now they want your identity. Now Chipotle wants your name, phone number, area where you shop (by virtue of the store location) and email address to do whatever they want with and all you get in return is a case of the sh$$$s. I’d bet that the marketing data value from this collected information far exceeds the extra costs that increasing worker pay had incurred.
If there was some justice in this world, the tech and corporate giants would at a minimum be compelled to pay the customers for this marketing data they take from us every day, but nope, they just get to profit from it.
I wonder how the employees that wanted the $15 an hour minimum wage law to be imposed on large and small business feel about being laid off? They must be very happy.
Good point. I recently visited New Haven and compared to the more rural/suburban areas people were much more paranoid about masks and social distancing, etc.
The normally busy restaurant areas were dead compared to two years ago. The rural/suburban areas are pratically back to normal even though they just fully “reopened” about 2-2.5 weeks ago. The only difference is many restaurants have continued the outdoor dining.
Our garbage pick up service has deteriorated because theycan’t find workers.
My grocery store has ads all over the stores offering $14/hour starting wage.
Thank you Biden/Kamala.
Chipotle hikes prices of its already too expensive food to cover the cost of raising wages
You have to cover the cost of Imodium somehow ;)
The chain hotels I have stayed at over past few months have figured how to cut costs: no maid service. I used to leave 10 a day now it is only the last day.
More automation coming up.
“Your card has been rejected, sir/ma’am/?, the police are on their way. Stand still or I will have to taze you. ‘beep’.”
They didn’t want to eat there.
Gee, who coulda seen that coming!!!!
I’ve still got some of the red ones, I think. I remember people earring them upside down. NIM. Need Immediate Money.
Our trash collector now has a truck with an arm that picks up the can and dumps the contents in the truck, then sets it back down. So far it seems to work better than the humans, who would spill trash, leave the lid open right before a thunderstorm, and leave the can in the middle of the driveway so you had to stop your car in the street to move it out of the way, in aforementioned thunderstorm. Only one driver needed.
Wow, higher prices AND you’ll need to buy new underwear?
Nope.
LOL
They can keep their Chipotles.
I won’t pay more for sorry grub.
“NIM. Need Immediate Money.”
There’s some rich irony in that. The government has been throwing out “Immediate Money” like Skittles the past year and that’s how we got inflation!
Re: 34 - I’ve eaten twice at Chipotle. Food seemed okay, if not a little expensive, but they did sell adult beverages if that is your thing with your food.
Much better than Taco Bell - I’ve eaten there twice - just awful.
My daughter was a fantastic ice hockey player. One year, her team headed to the district tournament. After they arrived and had a Thursday night practice we stopped at Chipotles. She missed the entire weekend. Never since, and never again.
