Let's Figure Out What Kind Of Chrysler They're Talking About In The B-52 Song 'Love Shack' Not the car in the video, what car actually fits what the song says?

It’s pretty definitively summer now, and if the coming of summer doesn’t fill you at least with some residual, school’s-out-tinged joy, then I suppose all I have to offer you is pity. Summer should also mean something else to anyone with a pulse: the 1989 B-52 song “Love Shack.” That song famously references a gigantic Chrysler, and I think it’s time we accurately determined which Chrysler the B-52s are singing about.

I got me a Chrysler, it seats about twenty...

...

Hop in my Chrysler, it’s as big as a whale

And it’s about to set sail

I got me a car, it seats about twenty, so come on

And bring your jukebox money

So, we know three things about the car that Fred wants to drive you down to the Love Shack in: it’s a Chrysler, it’s as big as a whale, and seats “about 20.”

Based on the year of the song...and the last time Chryslers made “whales”...suspect the 1971 to 1973 New Yorker....the seating twenty line is probably hyperbole.

"About" is the key. It could be 20...it could be 2.

I think they just needed a word that is sort of half-way close to rhyming with “money.”

I had a friend with a 1971 Cadillac Eldorado. It wasn’t 20 but we would occasionally squeeze 12 in there. 4 in the front the rest in the back on laps. We were much skinnier 16-18 year olds back then. Fun times.

Ha, ha. I had a 1978 Chrysler LeBaron two door. It was extremely reliable. It had a slant six engine with the torqueflite three speed transmission. I bought it in 1988 (for $500) and sold it in 1993, because I was transferring to another duty station and had three other cars (1964 Lincoln, 1980 Avanti and a 1987 Caprice station wagon) That car was bullet proof. Other than changing fluids and tires, all I did was rebuild the two barrel carburetor (very easy) and replace the starter (also very easy). Years later (2001-2002) I met the guy I sold it to, he still had it and drove it daily.

Actually you don’t. Imperial was a separate standalone product. It may have been a Chrysler Corporation product, but it’s technically incorrect to call it a Chrysler Imperial.

” Other than changing fluids “

My sister proved it would run on low oil level and no coolant.

I would say a 60s-70s Chrysler Newport. That has the thinnest seats and the fewest gizmos. Can seat eight plus more in the package tray.
