From a vantage point in front of the vessel, the wave rising in either side of the bow evokes the image of a dog carrying a bone in its mouth, and the vessel is said to have a bone in her teeth.
I woulda never guessed that in a gajillionty years, even if I had ever stopped to wonder about that phrase.
