A team from the University of Ottawa, in Ontario, Canada, says its Risk Evaluation for Support: Predictions for Elder-Life in the Community Tool (RESPECT) can accurately project death within six months.
Researchers based the tool on data from more than 491,000 elderly people who received home care between 2007 and 2013.
The team says its tool is undergoing a pilot study in community settings in Ontario and hopes that physicians and home care staff use the calculator to help them understand the care their patients may need.
Researchers say the tool focuses on older adults who use or need home care and are likely to die within the next five years.
To use the calculator, users answer 17 questions about their or their family member's health and ability to care for themselves.
Researchers found declines in the ability to carry out day-to-day activities - such as preparing meals or going to the bathroom - were bigger predictors of mortality than pre-existing conditions.

Biden is about a -1 on this scale
Gotta know it for insurance purposes. Right?
Need to buy a winter coat. Probably should check with the calculator first.
Only God knows my ‘check out time’.....................
“We’re not just here for the unvaccinated”
Funnily enough, it says that the cause of death will in every case be... covid.
It says I died three years ago.......................
What Death Panels?
“Knowing how long a person has to live is essential in making informed decisions about what treatments they should get and where they should get them”
In a Country with socialized healthcare this information is very useful for managing taxpayer costs for healthcare.
if their model predicts you will die in 6 months, why should you get a transplant.
if you are mentally or ideologically unfit, why should you get more than minimum care ever.
Is one of the questions “have you received the COVID vaccine?”
We’re already in socialized healthcare at senior age groups. Tons of seniors are on medicare.
Minimum care is exactly that.
There is only one end-of-life calculator who matters and He is not on an interactive website.
“Researchers found declines in the ability to carry out day-to-day activities - such as preparing meals or going to the bathroom - were bigger predictors of mortality than pre-existing conditions. “
gosh, who wouda thunk?
Doctors are famously incompetent at predicting how long someone will live. This will be used to deny care to the elderly. The upcoming socialist state will unable to keep working people healthy, much less seniors.
It is for frail patients in care facilities.
So I ran an experiment.
Dad died in January, so I used his information from two years ago to fill out the report. It gave me 3.5 years +/- 1.5 years
Based on stats, that was pretty good.
I’m sure that the motivations you point out are a big part of this, but I can also say, after spending the past 6 years caring for two elderly relatives, something like this tool would have helped me aid them in making better care decisions.
In hindsight, I would have urged more focus early on on physical and occupational therapy, and even consented earlier to hospice. They probably would have lived as long, and their quality of life would have been better.
These end of life decisions are brutal for the family member “on point”. Probably shaved a few years off of my own life as well!
