I believe the X15 accomplished the same ‘almost space’ feat about 1959.
The X-15 went above 50 miles / 80 km a number of times, and that’s the US Air Force’s demarcation line for where “space” begins.
Considering how much money and effort the USAF has spent on space systems the past 60 years, I’m inclined to trust their judgement.
