The ACLU on Tuesday filed an amicus brief in support of Britney Spears as the pop star attempts to free herself from a 13-year conservatorship she called “abusive” in testimony last month.
The ACLU filed the brief, along with 25 civil and disability organizations, in support of Spears’ wish to choose her own attorney, which is prohibited by the conservatorship. Spears’ court-appointed lawyer, Samuel Ingham III, resigned from the case last week. The brief, filed with the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, also calls for her to be given access to assistance and tools to make her selection for his replacement.
“Britney Spears has said that she wants to pick her own lawyer and the court should respect that wish,” Zoë Brennan-Krohn, staff attorney with the ACLU’s Disability Rights Project, said in a Tuesday statement. “The court should ensure Spears has access to the tools she needs to make that choice meaningfully and to hire someone she trusts to advocate for her stated goal: to get out of her conservatorship. Spears’s right to select an attorney is not only a basic tenet of the Sixth Amendment right to counsel, but also consistent with principles of personal autonomy and agency.

I just could care less. Let her have control, let her blow her money, who the Hell cares!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the rare occasions when the ACLU gets it right.
And where is the ACLU on all the patriots and Trump supporters in D.C. jails and solitary right now ??
Crickets.
Meanwhile the FBI lied on their FISA warrant, the Biden White House wants to snoop emails and texts to dispute Covid/Vaccine talk, and so on and THIS is what they throw their muscle into?
The American Civil Liberties Union, which has recently drawn criticism for favoring liberal causes over its tradition of representing unsympathetic clients and causes, is also weighing in on the side of Trump protesters being held alone.
“Prolonged solitary confinement is torture and certainly should not be used as a punitive tool to intimidate or extract cooperation. We’re pleased to see that message is getting through to Senators,” Tammie Gregg, deputy director of the ACLU National Prison Project, told the Washington Examiner in a statement.
Need to do more though.
It is no business of the Government, many other people wreck their lives, why this one matters?
The ACLU opposed quarantining a woman who’d had exposure to Ebola but fully supported quarantining the whole country for “15 days” that became 15 months.
FWIW, I agree with them, but it’s not the most important issue. (Though perhaps more important than some FReepers give it credit for.)
Yeah. Better late than never.

We have an American Gulag and the ACLU cares more about some screwed up pop star.
#NEWS: @Jim_Jordan and @RepMattGaetz demand @RepJerryNadler hold a hearing on court ordered conservatorships.

How is this possible in the US?.... 🤔
Favoring liberal causes IS representing unsympathetic clients and causes.
Messed up pop stars have rights too.
If she’s sane enough to work than she’s sane enough to control her money.
