Locked Up: Mercedes-Benz to Charge for Access to EQS’ Rear-Wheel Steering
The Truth About Cars ^ | July 23, 2021 | Tim Healey

If you want the more-advanced version of the rear-wheel steering system on the Mercedes-Benz EQS, and you live in Germany, prepare to pony up to unlock the software.

It will cost you about $575 a year to get an over-the-air update that will unlock the 10-degree rear-wheel-steering system. Unless you sign up for a three-year subscription, in which case you’ll pay a bit over $1,300, which is a bit of a discount in terms of per-year rate.

It's the Kodak model. They might lower the price on the car itself, but if you want to use any of it, pay up.

it worked for Elon and his cars so why not.

EMC did this with their large disk arrays, just pay them more money and you can have more storage.

Unless you sign up for a three-year subscription

A subscription. For features in a car you already bought. And if you find a way to jailbreak the operating system and enable a feature, you void the warranty. Every car manufacturer trying to pull this crap (BMW is also on the list) deserves to be punished by consumers.

I can't tell you how many pieces of electronic video gear from the 1990s had this same business model.

Buy an Ampex ADO (a digital special effects device that shrunk down a video image) for one price. Want the page flip effect? Buy an RTU (Right to Use) license. Want 3D effects? Buy another RTU license. Etc., etc.

The function was built into the machine already. Why do I have to pay more just to unlock it? Instead, just charge a bit more for each unit and let them all have full function.

It must be cheaper to deliver a fully loaded unit than to ship custom configurations. IBM Power platforms do the same. Tiered model gets gets delivered with max capability, but you pay to turn on processor and memory.

Then you pay EMC on the other end.

That’s how I like to do things. I don’t like paying per use. I’d rather pay more to make it mine to use when I want.

“EMC did this with their large disk arrays, just pay them more money and you can have more storage.”

IBM did it with their unit record equipment in the 60s. Hardware was already in the machines. You pay more, they hook it up. But IBM was renting the machines back then.

Cheaper to design and manufacture one type of Rear Axle than make two different types of Real Axles.

Imagine Dodge only giving you the Valet Key when you buy a Dodge Demon. LOL

It is only a matter of time before you have to pay a yearly subscription on your car itself or else it will just shut down.

My wife and I are the same way. Give us a good yearly or monthly rate for a year and leave us alone.

We cancelled all of our so called timed purchases from Amazon and ????. When, we need something, we will order it not when they want to ship whatever to us.

It is always nice to really know who owns the vehicle.

The right to repair is a must have feature.

When GM came out with Quadrasteer (4 wheel steering) pickups in 2003, the option cost $7000.

β€’ 107.8 kWh battery capacity
β€’ 11.25 hours (10 – 100%) charging time, AC Charging (240V)
β€’ 31 minutes (10 – 100%) charging time, DC fast charging (200kW)

Tell your local utility you want a 200 kW circuit (500 amp) installed. They’ll love you.

Of course, installing the 500 amp service is one thing. Having power available to charge the car is a whole ‘nother thing.
