An overactive sweet tooth may spell trouble for our cellular powerplants (Keto reversed damage)

The average American eats roughly 22 teaspoons of added sugar a day—more than three times the recommended amount for women and more than double the recommended amount for men.

Although this overconsumption is known to contribute to Type 2 diabetes and other disorders, the exact ways sugar sets the stage for metabolic diseases on a cellular level has been less clear.

Now, a team led by scientists has found that surplus sugar may cause our cellular powerplants—called mitochondria— to become less efficient, reducing their energy output.

Using their new model, Wu and her colleagues demonstrated that excess glucose reduces the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the mitochondrial membrane and makes mitochondria less efficient. PUFAs are vital players in supporting mitochondrial function and mediating a host of other biological processes such as inflammation, blood pressure and cellular communication.

Instead, excess glucose is synthesized into a different form of fatty acid that isn't as efficient or as flexible as PUFAs. This upends the lipid composition of the membrane and puts stress on the mitochondria, damaging them and impacting their performance.

Wu and her colleagues were able to reverse this detrimental effect by feeding their mouse models a low-sugar ketogenic diet, which suggests that reducing glucose and restoring normal membrane lipid composition supports healthy mitochondrial integrity and function. They also found that consuming excess carbohydrates reduces the beneficial effect of PUFA supplements.

"Although we may not always notice the difference in mitochondrial performance right away, our bodies do," Wu explained. "If the lipid balance is thrown off for long enough, we may begin to feel subtle changes, such as tiring more quickly. While our study does not offer medical recommendations, it does illuminate the early stages of metabolic disease and provides insights that may shape future prevention and therapeutic efforts."

I recently switched to sugar free chocolate. Yes, sweet tooth. It’s actually delicious now, you can hardly tell the difference.

But yeah, otherwise avoid sugar.

90% cocoa dark chocolate: 2g sugar per 3 pieces.

I'll usually have a couple of pieces.

Plenty of keto ice cream now. Pricey somewhat, but damn good.

I didn’t read their study, but I think they’re missing some pretty old wisdom.

It is all carbohydrates, not just sugar.

“Keto”; low carbohydrate dieting, allows the cells to go in to a state of autophagy, wherein old, pathological cellular structures are consumed. You only have to avoid carbohydrates long enough to burn up your store of glycogen. This takes about a day for most people.

Another benefit of these short “carbohydrate fasts” is you can reset your insulin sensitivity. A couple mini carb fasts a week, can reduce or eliminate prediabetes and hyperinsulinemea symptoms. Those include “metabolic syndrome” symptoms.

Get hungry to the point of feeling weak (”hitting the wall”) one or two times a week. Eat no carbs for two days in a row. Go to bed hungry and then don’t eat any carbs for breakfast or lunch. There are endless possible “diets”.

I began a keto diet 6 weeks ago. I have lost 13 pounds so far and feel more energy. My doctor is not happy about it. He wants to put me on statins.

Years ago when I started doing high protein/low carbs, I found there was a psychological component to getting started. I found that when I consumed a lot of carbs (i.e. a "normal" diet) there was a constant feeling of slight bloat. It was so constant that one becomes accustomed to it and assumes that is how one is supposed to feel.

When I went cold turkey on the carbs, my body and mind confused the absence of bloat with legitimate hunger, and I had a craving for carbs just to restore the feeling of bloat, but not to satiate any real hunger. It took a few days, the better part of a week, to get through those cravings. I've long since grown accustomed to the unbloated feeling as my new normal, and it's much easier to identify when I'm truly hungry as opposed to the false hunger of carbs cravings.

Yay, keto (again)!

We found some very tasty keto cupcakes.....that you just peel back the paper top (off of paper cup holding mix), add water, stir, zap for 60 seconds....and, Voila! a fresh baked chocolate cupcake that we top with REAL whipped cream (w/scant sugar).

No artificial flavors for bad ingredients, too.

I thought I saw those flash in front of my eyes when I had my first angina. I had a million of them in the fifties. How big are they now, the size of a quarter?
