Florida once again recorded more coronavirus deaths than ever in a single week. The state logged 1,727 fatalities among residents over the past seven days, a comparison of Florida Health Department reports published Friday and Aug. 20 shows.
Health officials also documented 151,760 more COVID-19 infections, the second-biggest amount in one week.
Florida’s death toll stood Friday at 43,979 residents. The respiratory illness has infected 3,179,714 residents statewide since the start of the pandemic.
In another sign that the virus has yet to subside — the highly infectious delta variant is the dominant strain — 16.8% of COVID-19 tests came back positive over the past week.
Health experts recommend the positivity rate remain below 5% for two weeks before considering the disease under control. The last time Florida’s Health Department reported positivity below that level was June 25.
Even as hospitals fill to the brim with COVID patients, the pace of vaccinations across Florida slowed. The state added just 192,408 shots to its tally in the past week, down from a summer peak of more than 340,000 reported Aug. 6.
In total, 12,916,873 Florida residents have received at least one shot, covering 68% of the eligible population at least 12 years old, Friday’s report states.
That includes 10,785,185 fully vaccinated, or 56.4% of eligible residents. That rate is lower than other large states such as New York, California, Illinois and Pennsylvania, as well as every state in New England.

Assertions without numbers. How many beds, how many hospitalized covid patients right now? Average stay? How many treated & released?
Mortality rates were higher in the beginning for covid perhaps because it was picking off the low hanging fruit first. Like those found in nursing homes and people with multiple comorbidities..

Thanks. Looks like that particular hospital is managing at this point. Most of the reporting would have us believe that the entire health system is on the brink of collapse.

Can’t tell you how accurate this is given all the manipulation we’ve been forced to witness these last several years, but I read 100,000 in hospital with covid as I type. How serious? How long are they staying? Are they just admitted as precaution or because they are very ill? They don’t seem to really want to pull the wool off and give us the raw data. Just the stats they like to give.
