Personally am only familiar with the denim process. The white thread is dipped into dye one or more times.
This leaves the indigo dye on the outside.
As the fabric is worn and abraded, the underlying white thread shows through.

Got a book here from my days in a stonewash facility.
Will post some of their info if there is interest.
