I’ve read this to my students on several occasions and recommended it often. How tough and self-reliant people had to be back then is nothing short of amazing. My grandmother was alive (but only 1) during that winter. She was in Iowa.

My first experience with the little house books was my 2nd grade teacher reading part of the Long Winter. It was about almost getting lost in a blizzard going to town from the school. My dad bought me the set and I still have it. I have read them many times over the years.
