Thousands Line Omaha Streets to Honor Marine Cpl. Daegen Page
Omaha World Herald ^ | September 11, 2020 | Jessica Wade & 2 Others

Cpl. Daegan Page received the kind of welcome home no warrior’s family wants — the kind with black limousines and flag-draped caskets, slow salutes and tears.

But on Friday afternoon, thousands of Nebraskans and Iowans made Page’s mournful homecoming an occasion to remember.

We were part of the crowds to honor this young Marine from our community. It was the least we could do.

A beautiful ceremony... but heartbreaking.

Rest in peace, Cpl. Page.

Oh my. I’m so happy to see this honoring of a hero from Omaha.

I love Omaha so much, lived there from 1994 until I moved to Georgia in 2017. I still miss things from there and all my friends and all my family in Lincoln.

Bless these fine people. RIP dear Marine Cpl Daegen Page.

God Bless the PGR and Legion Riders who do their utmost to ensure no veteran goes to their grave alone. Not an issue here but they were present.

Our fallen Indiana Marine came home yesterday. Marine Corporal Humberto Sanchez. They transported his casket with a police honor guard from Grissom Air Reserve Base to Logansport, Indiana.

They were accompanied by a motorcycle honor guard of 9,700 motorcycles. I believe it was a solid seven mile line of riders along country roads, highway and city streets lined with Hoosiers welcoming their hero home. The entire trip was 15 miles. The funeral will be on Tuesday.

I don’t know the reasoning behind it, but it was decided not to allow the Patriot Guard to ride in this event in Omaha. The reason given was that it would not be safe. ??

I would have preferred that they be included, but possibly it was related to the schedule and traffic issues.

It is so humbling to see the “welcome home” in this situation.

My oldest grandson was good friends in high school with Daegan. They played hockey together for years. It makes me sick what biden did to all these soldiers and to this country.

I always think of Omaha as a city full of friendly people. I was sent back to college there (UNO) in 70-72 to finish my degree. I met great men. I was lucky to know these men. I was last there in 78 for awhile.

"God Bless the PGR and Legion Riders who do their utmost to ensure no veteran goes to their grave alone."

PGR is Patriot Guard Riders? Before I sold my last Harley, I joined them and went on a couple of local rides to honor deceased Veterans. It was very moving.

FYI, The group was formed in 2005 to shelter and protect the deceased's family against protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, who claim that the deaths of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are divine retribution for American tolerance of homosexuality.

PGR members position themselves to physically shield the mourners from the presence of the Westboro protesters by blocking the protesters from view with their motorcade, or by having members hold American flags. The group also drowns out the protesters' chants by singing patriotic songs or by revving motorcycle engines. All funerals/services were by invitation only by family members.

PGR became national and expanded their scope to include other events involving military and first responders. Last I heard they were having some volunteer problems for road captains and such and might have disbanded.

I proudly have their patch on my motorcycle vest that I no longer have the opportunity to wear.

So sorry for your grandson and all of their teammates.

Yes, it is sickening that these brave young people were sacrificed by biden, and all who helped him carry off the debacle in Afghanistan.

This wasn’t actually the Patriot Guard. It was individual cycles and clubs from all over the state. They met at the Harley Davidson dealership in Kokomo, they were expecting 2,000. They keep upping the final count. Last I heard was between 9500 and 9700. It was totally awesome!

I live a mile from the base and we heard the plane bringing the Marines to the base around 8am. Very sobering, because we seldom hear a plane at that time that low, especially when we knew they were coming Sunday morning.

I wondered if the Patriot Guard would be at the funeral on Tuesday.

It was absolutely my privilege to serve and later ride with the PGR.

The longest (supposedly) motorcade for a fallen Marine was for Cpl Chance of Wyoming. It was the basis for the HBO movie Taking Chance with Kevin Bacon. Cpl. Chance was killed in Iraq circa 2004.

The motorcade stretched 90 miles.
