Fruit, vegetables and exercise can make you happier (Healthy foods & exercise makes you happy - causation found)
Medical XPress / University of Kent / Journal of Happiness Studies ^ | Sept. 17, 2021 | Olivia Miller / Adelina Gschwandtner et al

Posted on 09/18/2021 9:19:44 AM PDT by ConservativeMind

New research has found that fruit and vegetable consumption and exercise can increase levels of happiness.

While the link between lifestyle and wellbeing has been previously documented and often used in public health campaigns to encourage healthier diets and exercise, new findings published by the Journal of Happiness Studies show that there is also a positive causation from lifestyle to life satisfaction.

This research is the first of its kind to unravel the causation of how happiness, the consumption of fruit and vegetables and exercising are related, rather than generalizing a correlation. The researchers used an instrumental variable approach to filter out any effect from happiness to lifestyle. It showed that it is rather the consumption of fruit and vegetables and exercising that makes people happy and not the other way round.

Findings demonstrate that the ability of individuals to delay gratification and apply self-control plays a major role in influencing lifestyle decisions, which in turn has a positive impact on wellbeing. The research also shows that men appear to exercise more, and women eat more fruit and vegetables.

With it being well known that lifestyle diseases are a leading cause of ill health and mortality worldwide, and the UK having one of the highest obesity rates in Europe, these findings could have significant implications for public health policy.

Dr. Gschwandtner said: "Behavioral nudges that help the planning self to reinforce long-term objectives are likely to be especially helpful in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If a better lifestyle not only makes us healthier but also happier, then it is a clear win-win situation."

We’ve believed this way the longest time, but if a causation study can motivate people to make some simple changes that appear quite likely to change their outlook on life, then, so be it.

It is my hope that all who read Free Republic get as healthy as possible to continue the good fight.

The researchers, Dr. Adelina Gschwandtner (Kent's School of Economics), Dr. Sarah Jewell and Professor Uma Kambhampati (both from the University of Reading's School of Economics), used an instrumental variable approach to filter out any effect from happiness to lifestyle.

Then to one they will also tell you having the government run everything also makes you happy so grovel citizen!

I eat what I want. Very diverse diet. Had Scallops with a lemon butter sauce for lunch and fresh picked Concord grapes for desert. I’m in Upstate NY. For exercise, I go to our Farmers Market...and hit every store I can until I beat out. I’m 77 and nap time is coming up.

I eat lots of veggies, love them. Some need to be organic, others do not. Steam them to keep nutrients in.

Blood pressure goes down if I get to the treadmill at the gym several times a week and do a mile as fast as I can.

Häagen-Dazs is sold around the world, but at 3 times the American price. USDA’s dairy support is Fedzilla’s most delicious market interference.

I like to go down to the local farmers market.

Bought three farmers on Saturday.

Not really.

I buy my fruits and vegetables and put on my running shoes and then I run by my neighbor Steve’s house and pelt him with fruits and vegetables while yelling,

“This is for your fondue you cheese soup making geek!”

“Some need to be organic, others do not. Steam them to keep nutrients in.”

Better to boil them so they are palatable, and drink the pot liquor when you want the nutrients.
