Finally something useful from the European Commission!!!! And it is not bent bananas or nabob potato rules!
The main holdout is Apple, which said it was concerned the new rules would limit innovation, and that would end up hurting consumers. iPhones come with the company’s own Lightning charging port, though the newest models come with cables that can be plugged into a USB-C socket.
The push by the EU will certainly be cheered by the millions of people who have rummaged through a drawer full of cables for the right charger. But the EU also wants to cut down on the 11,000 metric tons of electronic waste thrown out every year by Europeans.

yep, I have a large box (3ft x 3ft) full to the top with wires of various types. Its annoying as hell.
Typical EU harmonized standards bullshite...the endless expensive pursuit of some academic wet dream.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me. I tossed a box literally 6 feet tall X 3 square full of old cables and junk.
The next week I needed a USB-3 cable for an HDD. I also needed a power pack that I was 100% sure I tried on every DC powered device I had.
But OTOH my “office” was starting to look like the opening sequence of the show “Hoarders.”
My chargers are in a box. In a closet. All tangled up. It’s sort of a “and in the darkness bind them” thing.
The problem isn’t just the cables, though. It’s that difference devices have different amperage/wattage requirements, so you need different base units for different devices. There is some overlap, but it is far from complete.

Anything that pisses Apple off is OK in my book. I sort of agree - the entire rest of the tech world is USB. I keep a few lightning cables for when I have relatives over who are handicapped by their “me-too” overpriced Apple crap.
As green energy rooftop solar systems begin to fail we will face the same problem ..... not made to have standard interchangeable parts.
Oh, and about that roof leak .... good luck working on a roof that’s an electrical generator.

With that, I have to ask if you have discovered the technical difference between a USB data cable and a USB charging?
How about the Asian format USB?
While on the road in the middle of nowhere?
Any and all involved in such thinking should be keelhauled and any survivors abandoned mid-ocean.
And any of their follower travelers.
Would Technology advance if everything was always the same and you never tried different things ?

And they also come in AC and millions of current ratings, polarity, cable end types, diameters...
AND many are parasitic continuously sucking a few watts 24/7. Just like GFCIs!!!
