Probably would have been better to have it destroyed and get the insurance payout for a total loss.

They should be able to get back to the house after the lava cools enough—- in about 20 years.

In about 6 months the lava should cool to about 200oF.
No running water or electricity, but they could put it on Air B&B.

Wow! If I were them, I would move back immediately. Sounds like God has smiled on that little house.
It almost looks like a church, with that white pole in the front. Just put a second, smaller white pole a couple of feet down, horizontally.

For the first couple of weeks, residents can just bake ‘em on the landscape.

Around the house (again) which is built on a small ridge.
Until, that is, the island lets go of the whole slope.
Story is clickbait.

Graph showing normal rate of cooling of lava over time with depth from the surface. dýpt à metrum = depth in meters; storkunar lÃna = solidification front; sjálfkæling à hrauni = self-cooling in lava; ár = years.
Cooling to 200C in a year is not unrealistic.
To: LesbianThespianGymnasticMidget
Your chart is in
oC. Looking at the depth in meters, it would be 10 years before a 2 meter depth cools to boiling point of water.
With the house surrounded by lava, they're going to need a kicking A/C system.

That is possibly the most heartless, mercenary, tone-deaf thing I have ever read.
You do understand that there are things that while not of value from a dollars and cents perspective have intrinsic, or emotional value to their owners, correct?
Insurance certainly cannot replace the sentimental connection both these families have with the house.
Wow, that’s unbelievable.
