An Illinois man died this month in the state's first human case of rabies since 1954, according to health officials on Tuesday.
The Lake County man, in his 80s, awoke in mid-August to find a bat on his neck...
The bat was captured and tested positive for rabies, but when health officials told the man he needed to start post-exposure rabies treatment, he declined, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) said...
He subsequently died and a bat colony was found in his home.

A bat colony in his home!? Any Freepers in that area with more information? I can't imagine a colony of bats in someone's home.

Interesting side note...
Folks in the veterinary profession can get rabies shots as a prophylaxis.
You know what they do before getting a booster?
Have a titer done to see if the booster is needed.

Covid strikes again!
Bat colonies in homes very possible - simple regular inspection and maintenance will usually spot any of these.
If you have bats in the structure, watch how they leave in the evening, and then seal the hole/gap(s) after they’ve gone out. Then it’s time to clean and disinfect the mess they’ve left.

When my ex wife died we helped clean out her place. In the attic we found a colony of at least a hundred bats. We used Tyvek suits and full respiratory protection to clean it out.
