Arginine, an inexpensive oral drug, could enhance radiation therapy for cancer (“even arginine on its own”)

Treatment with arginine, one of the amino-acid building blocks of proteins, enhanced the effectiveness of radiation therapy in cancer patients with brain metastases.

The study reported arginine, which can be delivered in oral form, prior to standard radiation therapy in 31 patients who had brain metastases. Nearly 78 percent had a complete or partial response in their brain tumors over the follow-up period of up to four years, while only 22 percent of the 32 patients who received a placebo prior to radiotherapy had such a response.

The trial was designed to gauge the effectiveness of arginine as a "radiosensitizer" that enhances the effects of radiation treatment. However, the results, and arginine's apparent mechanism of action, suggest that the amino acid might be useful more broadly as an anticancer therapy.

"Based on these findings we should continue to investigate arginine in combination with radiotherapy but also in combination with chemotherapy or immunotherapy, and even arginine on its own," said senior author Dr. Leandro Cerchietti.

Arginine, also called L-arginine, is inexpensive and widely available, generally considered safe, and can get relatively easily from the bloodstream into the brain.

Reducing NO production is one possible way of exploiting tumors' dependence on this molecule, but hasn't worked well, in part because of adverse side effects. The investigators hypothesized that boosting NO production instead—by adding its precursor arginine—might be beneficial, because while tumors can use NO to aid their growth and survival, they must keep its production below certain limits.

In the trial, patients were treated with arginine or placebo oral suspensions an hour before radiotherapy for their brain metastases—tumors in the brain that represent the spread.

Moreover, although metastatic cancer usually has a dire prognosis, there were some arginine-treated patients whose tumors in and outside the brain disappeared, suggesting the possibility of cures.

KEYWORDS: arginine; cancer; lysine; shingles
Arginine is available in one gram doses, either time release or otherwise.

The study used five to ten grams, of which the upper amount could cause stomach and other issues.

I take 2 grams L-arginine every day, occasionally 4. And like some other people, I have observed that it markedly improves the quality of nighttime sleep without in any way causing drowsiness during the day. Mechanism unknown, AFAIK.

It’s an amino acid. But I’ve been told that it also makes one susceptible to shingles. I happened to be taking it right before I got a very bad case of shingles and was told to quit. As with anything, do your research.

Simple fasting will also enhance radiation or chemo as healthy cells are made stronger by autophagy while cancer cells remain as is, thus susceptible.

A reaction similar to this was noted in the 40+YO book Life Extension (1981) by research scientists Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw, founders of the Life Extension Foundation.

It was also noted that arginine reactivated dormant herpes 1 and 2 viruses. The hypothesis was that arginine fed these viruses what they needed to replicate. The scientists then ingested instead Lysine - another amino acid - which had the opposite effect, suppressing the viruses replication. The phenomenon was repeatable. So it was recommended that herpes sufferers use lysine instead.

This may also be true of chicken pox/shingles viruses - they may be similar enough that this occurs in the same way.

They were using these amino acids - they are not drugs - in experiments to attempt to increase the production by the pituitary gland of Human Growth Hormone in adults in order to promote weight loss. Revolutionary at the time.

Might want to check back articles of Life Extension Magazine. May help here.

Believe me, every time I think the shingles might come back, I eat a bunch of lysine.
So maybe the answer is to take both together.

For some reason I hate poultry. Organic, maybe. Last time I opened up a turkey it smelled like formaldehyde to me and I haven’t eaten it since. I eat a lot of beef and try to eat grass fed and I eat salmon wild caught from Alaska. I am conscious of the food I eat and I really do feel like I have a handle on my food. But I’m probably overlooking something.

Arginine is an essential requirement for the replication of viruses and progression of viral infections. 6,7. Arginine bioavailability is absolutely necessary for the replication of herpes simplex virus, which causes cold sores/genital herpes. When arginine is not available, herpes viruses in cells are unable to complete a single replication ...

The arginine rich histones, H3 and H4, had greater neutralizing and viral aggregating activity than the lysine rich histones, H2A and H2B. Of all core histones, histone H4 is most potent in neutralizing IAV, and incubation with IAV with histone H4 results in a decrease in uptake and viral replication by epithelial cells when measured by qRT-PCR.

Amino acids have been implicated with virus infection and replication. Here, we demonstrate the effects of two basic amino acids, arginine and lysine, and their ester derivatives on infection of two enveloped viruses, SARS-CoV-2, and influenza A virus. We found that lysine and its ester derivative can efficiently block infection of both viruses in vitro.

Changing the diet to favor a high ratio of L-Lysine to L-Arginine directly affects the replication of these viruses. This fact has been known for decades. Let me cite a couple of related examples, and then move on to the coronaviruses.

L-arginine is an amino acid commonly sold in supplement form and obtained naturally in the diet. L-arginine-rich foods include plant and animal proteins, such as dairy. Arginine is a nonessential amino acid, the internal production of which is, however, insufficient and needs to be compensated for orally [30, 46, 47].
