The omicron variant is likely to have picked up genetic material from another virus that causes the common cold in humans, according to a new preliminary study, prompting one of its authors to suggest omicron could have greater transmissibility but lower virulence than other variants of the coronavirus.

They say this particular mutation could have occurred in a host simultaneously infected by SARS-CoV-2, also known as the novel coronavirus, and the HCoV-229E coronavirus, which can cause the common cold. The shared genetic code with HCoV-229E has not been detected in other novel coronavirus variants, the scientists said.
The study is in preprint and has not been peer-reviewed.
The “striking” similarity between omicron and HCoV-229E could have made the former “more accustomed to human hosts” and likely to evade some immune system responses, said Venky Soundararajan, a biological engineer who co-wrote the study.
“By virtue of omicron adopting this insertion … it is essentially taking a leaf out of the seasonal coronaviruses’ page, which [explains] … how it lives and transmits more efficiently with human beings,” he said.

The Spanish Flu eventually merged/mutated with other viruses and became mostly benign. Traces of it are still found in flu viruses today, over a hundred years later.

But seriously, that’s the direction in which we’re heading IF WE LET THE VIRUS run its course and do what viruses (and our coexisting/adapting immune systems) do INSTEAD OF CONSTANT restrictions and never-ending testing of healthy people.
How about we pack thousands of people into high rises and subways/buses and have homeless drug addicts defecate on the sidewalk while we feed the population vitamin deficient junk food and see what happens? Oh we did.
The common cold is extremely infectious but no one fears it.
It’s the danger of death or disability that people fear.

That was my first thought when it was first announced.
Maybe the reverse has happened and a cold virus mutated to incorporate Sars- Cov- 2? And yes, the reverse happening would give an entirely different result on virality.

It will important to study those who become infected with the Omicron variant. Thus far they are not becoming seriously ill. the major question is will the immunity they develop offer protection against the more virulent strains of COVID? If it does then this highly contagious variant may put an end to the pandemic regardless of what humans do. Omicron may be to COVID what cow pox was to small pox.
Our government is too "smart" for its own good. Or more likely, our folks in charge have realized that the crisis is giving them a lot of power and they are reluctant to let it go?
Unless you live in blue areas, most people are tuning out whatever Dr. Fauci is telling us nowadays. Hopefully when Republicans win Congress in 2022, it'll be the end of federal mandates including masks on air travel.
